3 Ways To Watch TV Online That Do Not Involve Torrenting

There are more than ways to watch TV online. The protocol that gets the most publicity is Bit Torrent, because it seems most people have a Bit Torrent client and are more than happy to torrent. The publicity and attention the stream has received over the past two years has put it in jeopardy in much the same way that Kaazaa did a few years ago. Also, unfortunately, ISPs have started to shape their traffic and torrents have suffered as a result. There are other ways to watch your shows and I’ll talk about three here.

Before I list them, I want to talk briefly about the Internet and how it works. The Internet works by sending messages from one computer to another through a server. These messages come in the form of data packets. They are small pieces of information and each packet can follow a different path. This helps when getting information from one computer to another because it means that areas of high congestion can be bypassed. All Internet protocols use packets of information. These packets are then collected on your computer and you see the image, video or web page. Packets are also used by online TV, but how they are assembled depends on the client you are using and may affect picture or sound quality.

Now, on to the three ways to watch TV online.

1. Broadcast from the network’s website

Believe it or not, you can see a lot of shows on network websites. If you missed the show during the week, you can go to NBC, ABC or CBS and watch the show there. Networks rely on broadcast technology, which means that packets are collected and displayed in order, and usually reside on a server somewhere. Shows are on demand. This is great news if you miss the occasional show and the show will usually be there the next day for you to watch. However, there is a bit of a downside to this way of looking. If you watch during high traffic times, you may experience a delay as the packets will take longer to mount as they need to be mounted in order and it is possible that the picture will become noisy due to the packets damaged. The episode usually lasts only for a week, no more. Also, if you’re not in the country of origin you’re out of luck, the networks don’t allow anyone from foreign markets to watch their shows.

2. Peer to Peer TV or P2PTV for short.

P2PTV, as the name suggests, uses the same technology that torrents use. The only difference is that the picture is edited in order, so you can watch it as you go, where normal Bit Torrent clients collect the file in a random order, getting the information from the various people who appear on the Internet at the time. The two big players in the market with P2PTV are Vuze and Joost, which is in beta at the moment. The picture is displayed clearly and the clients used are easy to use, as you would expect. P2PTV has the advantage of being able to overcome network congestion more easily than streaming from, say, a network’s website, due to the way torrenting and peer-to-peer clients work. The main limitation is that because P2PTV uses the same technology as Bit Torrent, it also has the same inherent limitations as torrents. For example, if your ISP is throttling traffic or you’re on a college or school network that restricts Bit Torrent use, you’ll likely end up on the network with one of these clients.

3. Streaming multiple channels through one client

This is similar to the first option of watching the show via streaming on the network’s website, but takes it a step further. As with P2PTV, you need to download a client to watch the show, and with this technology you can watch the show in real time rather than later. As with networks, the show is using streaming that looks like normal traffic on ISP and college networks, and is therefore likely to reach your computer. The client allows you to select the station you want to watch from a list and watch the show from there. It also has the advantage of bypassing the foreign market restriction of watching the show on the network’s website. There are many clients available online that you can use to stream TV channels on your computer. The disadvantages of using streaming via a client are almost the same as for viewing via a network website: During peak load times you may get delayed images or possibly slow images due to slow motion and corrupted packets. This means that the picture and sound will be less than ideal.

There are three main ways to watch TV online that are not directly related to Bit Torrent, although one of the ways uses similar technology. It really depends on your situation and how much TV you watch which one is best for you. You can either watch the show on the network’s website, use P2PTV or an online streaming client. Each way has its advantages and disadvantages. If you don’t want to use torrents, then there are alternatives.
