Sidestep Catapult Drives Me Wild

I woke up this morning from a dream of wild animals moving about in the backyard – so I reached for the book next to my bed: Catapult to the Side, by Anne-Adele Wight. I found the same creatures described by my unconscious lurking in her poems. Some animals are hungry; some simply curious; others are downright evil. Wight embraces the disposition of these animals in all their complexity.

Wight’s poetry brings our primitive nature into consciousness. As I read, a persistent memory of my primal side bursts through the surface, illuminating everything. Neuropsychology has mapped this part of our brain. It is sometimes called the reptilian brain and part of it rests at the base of the skull. It lives within us and informs our behavior, though many are eager to deny it.

A mystical teacher, DC Vision, once told me, “People think the natural world is beautiful. It’s not always so glorious. When you look closer, you see that nature is wild. It devours itself.” He spent several years traveling on horseback across the United States, so he should know.

I have my gut feelings about the reptilian brain. Avoiding interactions with the natural world and denying that we are part animals pushes our primal instincts deeper into the unconscious. Repression makes this part of human nature, which is linked to survival, more dangerous – or something to fear. Wight chooses to confront our natural animal instincts. In What Led to the Hawk’s Nest, her wild creatures seem unwelcome in the civilized landscape. “Florida panther coming at you out of the garage.” Later, “the teeth close on the wrist.” This theme is repeated in The Leopard Flower, “have you ordered animals for the tool shed?/ they will share it”.

To our civilized minds, wild animals are unpredictable and cruel. However, there is a particular memory of the human world that is part of this:

Ages have passed since we lived at sea

still speechless

in the heavy-forest language

our throat is missing the bone and cord.

Wight highlights the divide between humans and animals: communication through language is what drives a rift between species. However, even with all their ability, humans lack the apparatus to talk to animals.

Wight entities are filled with light and ignited by crystalline energies. Her book embraces the irresistible: the elemental forces of nature and the mysteries that envelop them. Earth, air, water, fire and spirit come together in many of its parts. Crystal communication, plant energies, water expressions and air blasts bring out energy and light through movement or even in stillness. Although these elements travel a slightly different frequency than humans and animals, they are no less powerful. When activated, the elements present signs of supernatural significance. I love the way Wight poses the final question, set apart from this stanza. She is capable of perceiving through multiple senses. The wight is also attuned to the experiences of the astral body.
