Tropical pitcher plants are the kings of the world’s carnivorous plants. They are the only carnivorous plants that can grow large enough to swallow large insects to large rodents. Growing one of these royal carnivorous plants in your backyard means creating a death trap for any small animals nearby. Although this prey can potentially be saved most of the time, it has been seen on YouTube, books and pictures that it can actually suffocate and become a plant dinner if it falls into a large trap which happens all too often in Lakeland Florida.

The insect will sit on the edge and start sucking the nectar from the plant, but little do they know that the nectar is drugged. Almost like a man who drinks beer or vodka, drinks too much and is done. The edges of the traps are also slippery, designed so that the prey can fall into the trap when it becomes slippery and can no longer be held on the slippery surface. Once at the bottom, they drown in the pool of digestive juices and then the plant will begin to break down the insect’s soft parts and absorb its glands.

The capture process is similar to anole lizards; Lizards are attracted to the smell of the delicious nectar and start licking it off their lips, but that doesn’t seal the deal as quickly as it does with insects. In the state of Florida, it can be very hot during the summer months and it is not always easy for lizards to find drinking water. They are tempted to push their luck by climbing inside the pitchers and heading for the digestive juices to drink; after all, it’s better to drink from a pool of drowned and digested insects than not to drink at all. Insect food can take about 3 weeks to completely digest, while anole lizards can take up to 2-3 months before leaving nothing but lizard bones at the bottom of a pitcher plant trap. A pitcher plant that eats nothing but reptiles can grow into a very large plant, and if the plant is getting the moisture, heat, and lighting it needs, it can grow some very large traps (depending on the species).
