How To Tell If Your Pet Reptile Likes You

I would say that most herpetologists might not be too concerned about whether their reptile likes it or not. They usually have quite a collection of snakes, lizards, turtles and even frogs. They may appear to be well cared for on a physical level and neglected on a personal level. Reptiles are also known as “exotic pets”. The reptile trade is horrible and many people including myself do not support this trade. About ninety-five percent of animals will die from being poorly transported and inadequately cared for during their journey to and from different countries.

Like children, pets are a reflection of their home life and their happiness and contentment will largely depend on the quality time you are willing to give them. Reptiles are very ancient creatures, they go way back in history. All reptiles are ectothermic, so they show affection a little differently than a cat or a dog. In nature, they can almost stop their heart beating. They have the ability to slow down their metabolism in the winter to hibernate, this is also known as brumation.

I’ve had a pet lizard since he was just two weeks old, he’s a mischievous and content twelve year old. He behaves like a dog in slow motion. He is tamed, for example when I call him he will normally respond by turning his body and looking in the direction of my voice. I have to call his name several times before he comes to me. Reptiles do not require feeding every day. They can go for weeks without food, especially if they are hibernating. How do you know your reptile likes you?

They will feel comfortable around you. If you’ve built a really successful bond, they’ll let you hand feed them without biting you. This is the strongest indication that they have accepted you as their trusted friend.

When my pet wants attention, he will poke his head out of his enclosure indicating that he wants to go out for a run. He has now decided that he wants to eat his pureed vegetables from a plastic spoon once a week. This unusual habit occurred after he underwent abdominal surgery two years ago to remove a fatty tumor. He looks forward to being spoon fed and he knows when I am preparing his food. One would think he was almost psychic.

My snake “Tilly” would take my glasses off when she wanted my attention by swinging my face like a cat would. She would always choose the most difficult time to do so. I have never avoided it. I loved their cold-blooded love and felt honored that my pet had allowed me to bond so much with them. Not many reptile keepers can say they’ve been this close to a reptile. Building a trusting bond between you and your reptile takes time, patience and consistency especially with reptiles. These cold-blooded beauties have fascinated me for many years. I have watched their actions in nature marveling at their uncanny ability to change color so quickly and often due to their moods and the varying temperatures of the day. They are very diverse animals and well adapted for survival in the wild. As a reptile keeper I have learned that you can never own them, you share your time and enthusiastic passion with them. I have a wonderful bond with my pet lizard Abbott.
