Reading – It’s Not For Fun Anymore

Recent studies have shown that across the board, in all mediums, Americans are reading for pleasure less than ever before. This is not just literature, novels, etc, this is all forms of the written word, including magazines, and even the mighty Internet. Yes, that includes blogs. Less than a third of adults reported having read any literature in the past year that was not required for school or other work.

It sounds shocking at first, but really, who didn’t see this coming?

Actually, those stats seem pretty high to me. I think out of everyone I know, only 3 or 4 people would consider themselves regular readers. Sitting down with a book has become a quaint notion, an old-fashioned novelty, almost an affection, like pipe smoking, cigar collecting, home brewing, bonsai trees, single malt scotch, and Civil War enthusiasm.

This is troubling to me, obviously, since 70%-80% of what I do with my life is based on writing, and therefore reading. Am I training in an outdated trade? Is my dream of becoming a successful writer somehow like my dream of becoming a successful blacksmith?

And what exactly is causing this decline in literacy? The obvious answer is that there are not enough “Reading is FUN” posters in our libraries. How are people supposed to know if they are not told? I think if the statistics were examined, you would find a very clear connection between the decline of Elijah Wood’s “Reading is the formation of the Hobbit!” posters and the decline of American reading. But while this is certainly a major contributing factor, there must be others, because I’ve seen my fair share of pro-reader ads, and even find myself reading far less than I used to. What is happening? Let’s take a look at some of the elements of modern society that are pushing the written word out…

Television

The low cost and ease of production for reality shows that feature attractive, worthless automatons in crude parodies of life situations has allowed for a huge explosion in the amount of television shows, with each channel boasting dozens of similar shows, each with its own spinoffs, knockoffs and webisodes. until total psychological satiety is reached. All available brain space is filled with televised thoughts of attractive and useless automatons.

Direct to Video Knockoff Movies

Having already seen every other movie on Blockbuster, people gravitate towards low budget, almost homemade movies released to coincide with similarly named, similarly themed theatrical movies, eg, Transformers / Transmorphers , Beowulf / Beowulf

Video Blog (Watch YouTube)

Tired of ingesting the crazy thoughts of foreigners by reading them in written text form, Americans are turning to video blogs, or “Vlogs,” where they can listen to the crazy thoughts of foreigners while watching their faces from an angle uncomfortably and casually tight camera. assigning him celebrity status by public whim.

Sports/Video games

Competitive entertainment allows bored Americans to work on reflexes and mental agility without actually doing anything, to feel part of something without actually being part of something. People flock to Sports/Video games as an outlet for their personal energies and as a general mental anesthetic. It helps to relieve the pressure of income and available time.

Beowulf: The IMAX 3D Experience

The CGI animated film throws arrows, spears, axes, blood, guts and a naked Angelina Jolie straight at viewers, completely blowing our minds and making us never want to read, write, talk or walk again.

to YouTube

Endless supply of videos where lightsabers have been digitally placed in the hands of people or animals that didn’t previously wield lightsabers.

There seems to be a trend here. As part of the general movement away from difficulty and towards ease and instant gratification, humanity seems to be trying to avoid even the difficult senses. The popularity of video blogs shows that people would rather have more information pumped into their brains through their ears than focus their eyes on papers and try to understand the writing. Is the day too far when even listening to information is considered too much effort? Too boring, too slow?

Perhaps right around the time of the invention of direct connections to the brain. Entertainment will not require us to use our senses at all. It’s just going to jump right into our minds in a big, sticky, informative hole. A whole new form of blog will emerge, not the web log, or the video log – the “brain log”, or…”the blog”.
