Toxic Gases and Human Life

There are many gases produced by cars, machinery, and garbage that can affect the flow of oxygen inside human red blood cells.

Choose from my usual level there are cells that transport oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood within the human body.

Today in this article I will talk about carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and carcinogens and the extent to which they affect both the environment and human beings. Local, regional and global people are encouraged to maintain a clean environment.

Carbon is a building block of molecules that make up living cells and its essential elements for life on earth. Carbon can be found in gas, liquid, fossil fuel or solid form and moves in the atmosphere, ocean, rivers and land through chemical processes and geophysical means.

It moves through the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, carbonic acids and then flows into the ocean and all these gases are harmful to human beings as they can lead to air bone diseases like tuberculosis (TB), asthma and many others.

Carbon dioxide is a gas that occurs naturally in the air and is produced when animals breathe, vegetation decays, and when carbon-containing material burns or decays. Carbon dioxide is a key component in photosynthesis, a major food-based source for organisms on land.

Through photosynthesis, carbon dioxide combines with water and sunlight energy to produce sugars that provide energy for plant growth.

Many years ago, the earth’s atmosphere consisted of carbon dioxide until plants removed the gases by decomposition. Human species have reversed the process by sequestering carbon through the burning of fossil fuels.

Carbon dioxide is currently called a “greenhouse gas” and absorbs heat in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is absorbed back into the system physically through plants, which can be mitigated if humanity destroys too many trees and reduces its absorption capacity. People especially in urban centers cut trees for sources of firewood due to erratic electricity supply.

Newly settled farmers in Zimbabwe worry about carbon dioxide from unnecessary barrel fires that end up destroying grass and trees in search of wildlife.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless gas produced by incomplete combustion from vehicles and cigarettes. It is a poison that combines with hemoglobin (red blood cells) to form carboxy-hemoglobin pink, which prevents red blood cells from carrying oxygen to body tissues. In most developing countries like Zimbabwe, many vehicles are not roadworthy and emit fumes that produce carbon monoxide.

Chain smokers have a level between 9-10% and at this level nothing can be seen as harm, except for people with heart or lung complaints. One should avoid smoking, burning bushes and driving cars on valuable roads to curb carbon monoxide

Carcinogens are substances that can cause cancer in animal tissues as well as in human beings. Carcinogenic substances such as arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium and asbestos are among the substances that form carcinogens. Carcinogens can be eliminated from the workplace by encouraging workers to wear protective clothing.

In Zimbabwe most of the gas filling tanks are not well cared for, teachers who still use chalkboards directly inhale the chalk dust and those in the cement manufacturing industry, stone masons, builders and many other professionals have to avoid carcinogens in their livelihoods daily.
