Is Your Soil Sexy Enough?

Good soil is the most important first foundation for successfully growing roses – or any garden plant. Earth is a fascinating and easy to understand element. Your land is a “living” entity. Within it are organic and mineral compounds and beneficial soil fungi and bacteria that all affect the health of your roses and plants, and therefore, your success with your plants. The trick is to make your soil “sexy” enough to lure those beneficial elements into your garden soil!

With just a touch of knowledge and understanding, you can turn this truly amazing element – your soil – into your greatest garden ally.

Good soil is vital to all life forms…plants, animals…and us! Henry A. Wallace made a pointed observation in the 1938 Yearbook of the US Department of Agriculture:

“The earth is the mother of all of us – plants, animals and people. The earth’s phosphorus and calcium build our skeletons and nervous systems. Everything else our bodies need besides air and sun comes from the earth.”

Not many of us stop to think that the healthy development of our bodies depends on the soil of our Earth. Other species and plants, with their lives literally rooted in the soil, are directly connected to the soil.

Without soil, life on earth could not exist. All life forms depend on this basic component of life. However, humanity is alone in the task of modifying the earth. We change it to suit our needs. Often, we have depleted its vitality, or destroyed it with toxic waste. We treated it chemically, destroying the friendly bacteria and fungi along with the bad ones. But we also have the ability to improve it. Although much of the wisdom of the past has been lost over time, we have regained an understanding of the importance of natural education. We have information at our command that can help us give our plants the best of the basics..and thus provide the best for ourselves.

Soil is a culture of billions of microorganisms and a mechanical support for plant roots. The main purpose behind any addition of organic matter is to increase the biological life of the soil, yet few gardeners realize this.

When we treat soils so that beneficial bacteria and beneficial fungi are stimulated, plants grow better and our returns on time, effort and money expended increase. Your soil is more “attractive” and healthier for these beneficial “bugs”, which are vital to the health and well-being of your roses and garden plants. This rich, organic “sexy” soil attracts these vital organisms, will keep the interdependent life forces growing and keep your soil “fertile” and invigorating.

Fungi and bacteria break down the nutrients available in the soil into a usable form that can be absorbed by higher plants. Soil organisms are important in another way: as they live and die, they absorb, store, and then gradually release soluble nutrients that might otherwise be lost. Thus, they multiply the use of fertilizers.

Air circulation around the roots is also important. If air does not move freely around the roots, or when soil moisture fluctuates too much (sometimes wet and sometimes dry), or when there is a lack of protective cover, both the plant and the fungus suffer. Organic changes can greatly improve this function.

If native soils are rich, well-drained, and abundantly irrigated by rainfall, any crop adapted to the region will thrive. The catch is that very few of us are lucky enough to have ideal conditions.

Likewise, most soils probably don’t need major amendments either. Proper attention to soil conditioning and amendment before first planting your roses, and simple, regular, seasonal additions of organic amendments such as compost, will go a long way in making your soil “sexy” enough to attract and hold all the necessary bio. -Elements needed for healthy soil and keep it fertile enough to keep a smile on your rose petals!
