How To Write a Fantasy Fairy Story With a Child – Crayons & Complete Approval Required

Children have amazing visions, they play and pretend to be fantasy fairies, pixies, dragons, all of which come alive within their imaginations. Why not tap into their brilliance by creating a story, written and illustrated, by your child or your child friend, through a series of questions. It’s an interview in a sense.

A very strong word of caution though, PLEASE MAKE THIS FUN for the baby and you. If the child is tired or restless, his/her imagination is not at its best anyway and you will not create a happy memory with them, nor will you have the wonderful vision that the child actually has. Take maybe 15-20 minutes of quality time to play with the baby. I can even video it, but only if it doesn’t get in the way and doesn’t create inhibitions.

It is more than possible that a sentence in a single sitting will be sufficient. Try not to insert any of your own ideas, just listen, feel the flow of their conversation and maybe ask a few small questions for clarification. Time it right and this experience will give you a great story to always reflect on. NOTES to the Parent or Contributor will also be inserted below to help you on your way.

You remember! Second, the child seems a little tired. STOP and take another day. This is PLAY and this should be FUN.

What you need:

A pen and a blank tablet in hand ready to fly as the words come out. A readiness for FUN and adventure, prepare yourself by clearing any preconceived outcomes in the story. This is NOT your story.. this is the children’s story. Be completely unbiased as far as her story line is concerned. Be a non-judgmental interviewer. If any of the questions become irrelevant or don’t seem to add to the story? Don’t ask them. If you think of a question that seems to fit best? Ask him! Be like a child!

What your child needs:

A set of crayons or magic markers and a drawing pad of paper. Any type of paper will work, so don’t get hung up on randoms. Children do not look for perfection in things.. it is WE who instilled this in them. If the child does not want to color or draw what you ask? NO BIG ONE! Just enjoy their story. NO strict rules.

The most important thing that the child needs for this process? Your smiling encouragement and approval.

Questions for the story:

1)

I would like you to tell me the story of a fairy adventure. This is YOUR story. I’ll tell you little things about it to help you embrace your imagination, but this is a story from YOUR heart and mind.

You walk through a beautiful forest. tell me about the forest

Can you draw the forest?

2)

You keep walking and come to an alcove. You see a beautiful meadow with flowers and green grass. In the distance you see a glorious castle.

Tell me about the castle.

Can you draw the castle?

3)

You decide you need to see the inside of the castle.

Oh! What are you looking at?

Can you draw it?

4)

You meet the people inside the castle.

Who are they? What do they look like?

Can you draw them?

5)

I love this ride, can you tell me the rest of the story?

NOTE to parents and friends: “If” the child stumbles, add ideas for him/her to think about. These elements do not have to be in the story… they are only meant to enhance his/her imagination. Try to be playful with this: “What color is water?” not a bad question, remember this is about freeing the imagination. Some of your additions or ideas could be:

1) What do the flowers, trees and meadow look like? Are there any bugs?

2) What does she/he or the dragon or the mouse or whatever eat on the way?

3) Did she/he bring food and water with her/him?

4) You meet a tree fairy. What is her name? What does she look like?

5) Does he have a fairy friend? What are their names? How do they look like that?

6) Are there any animals you meet on your journey? What are their names? Do you talk to them? Do they talk again?

7) Does anyone come with you on your trip or do you walk alone? If so what are you talking about?

8) As you get closer to the castle, you see it more clearly… how does it look? If there’s a princess living inside, who else lives there?

9) Finally come to the front door and decide to knock. The door opens… who opened the door? Describe what they said and what did you say to them?

10) You meet a pixie fairy inside the castle. What is his name, what does he look like, what books does he read? What do you want to be when you grow up? Where would you like to travel and why? Does she recognize the tree fairy or any of the other creatures she meets along the way?

11) You and the princess or elf spend a lovely afternoon of tea and cookies together. It was a very wonderful day, why? Describe the tea party. Where do they have the tea party? What do the cups look like, what kind of cookies? Is anyone else coming to the tea party?

12) You decide it’s time to go home. Before you leave, you and the princess or elf exchange gifts to remember each other. What are the gifts and why did they give what they gave? What did they say inside the card?

13) As you get ready to leave, hug the princess or elf goodbye and tell them you’ll be back. The princess asks you where she will travel next, what do you say?

Have fun!
