8 Basic Ways of Preventing Deforestation

There has been so much discussion on the effects of deforestation on our environment. These effects range from alarming to catastrophic. We have read the newspaper headlines showing the devastation that natural disasters have caused. Floods have not only damaged millions of properties across the globe, but have also claimed lives. Landslides have done the same. These two are the results of the balance of nature being disturbed – they are the effects of deforestation.

Deforestation is the act of converting parts of forests into residential or industrial areas. More and more businessmen are pushing through the forests to get more land. The environment is sacrificed in exchange for profit. And this is a very disturbing fact.

As an individual or as part of the global community, you can do something to help prevent deforestation. Maybe you can’t fight illegal loggers with your bare hands, but with a few basic ways, you can make a difference – however small. Here is a list:

1. If deforestation is a negative event, then a positive event must occur to counteract its effects – reforestation. Plant trees and start doing this in your yard. Trees release oxygen that is essential to human existence and they, in turn, capture the carbon dioxide that humans and animals emit. Trees also help retain water in their roots. With this simple action, you can prevent soil erosion, which is the main cause of landslides!

2. Use recycled items like books or pillowcases, toilet paper, even shopping bags. If you can, don’t waste any of these products so that no new raw materials are required to replace them.

3. If you are a farmer (or if you know someone who is a farmer), try to rotate your crops. Instead of using a different piece of land each year, why not use the same piece with different crops? This practice also helps maintain soil fertility. With crop rotation, not only is there variety in the harvest each year, but there is also the opportunity to keep that piece of land as long as you can.

4. Cut only mature trees. Don’t kill the little trees. And for every tree that is lost, plant another as a replacement.

5. Join environmental awareness groups that will help you be an advocate for reforestation. In Washington, specifically at Washington High School, there was a group of students who founded a service learning project. In their project, they asked for a penny from each person. They explained that this money would help buy acres of rainforest in the Amazon. Once that passes, no deforestation can take place in that purchased area.

6. There is a report that more and more trees are being cut down to produce palm oil in Indonesia and Malaysia. This massive destruction in the forests of both countries resulted in the loss of habitat for the native orangutans. As more trees are lost, more animals become homeless. You cannot completely prevent this, but you can limit the consumption of products containing palm oil such as bread, chocolate, and even some cosmetic products such as shampoo, soap or toothpaste. In terms of food consumption, you can start a diet with baked or boiled foods instead of frying them.

7. Instead of using firewood, use coal to heat your fireplaces during the winter season. Remember that it only takes a few hours to consume firewood, but it would take years to grow a single tree. Think twice before buying firewood again.

8. Support the laws or programs that have been made for the protection of forests and the prohibition of any form of deforestation. Programs such as the Tropical Forest Action Plan have made a big difference in the way deforestation is viewed today. This program led the discussion of tropical deforestation.

It is imperative to know that there is no such thing as a small, insignificant action when it comes to defeating deforestation. No matter how small your deed is, the important thing is ‘every action can make a difference’. Deforestation can be prevented and you can be an active force in achieving this.
