What Does it Mean to Be Soulful Or Spiritual?

I am often asked what I mean when I refer to spirituality or spirit in the context of life at work, at home, at play, or in relationships. Here’s what I mean.

To me, soul or spirit (and I will use them interchangeably from here on) describes the Core, Inner Force or Energy that lives within every human being. To be spiritual or spiritual, then, is to live life according to a deeper meaning that results from a lifelong practice of self-reflection, search, and exploration.

Spiritual moments

No one I know lives life spiritually 24/7/365. However, many spiritual people experience moments of joy, union, connection, love, compassion, gratitude and silence, etc., where they “transcend” their ego-personality selves. In this spiritual place, these people experience a kind of “knowing”, a kind of “connection” with the whole Universe, where they access a “wisdom”, where they really “see” life from this larger dimension or perspective – where all ego-based “masks” and false appearances melt away. These moments are not “mental”. These moments are more like being “in the zone” where we know how to do, be and have, but not from a “mind” driven perspective. In this country, we are “out of mind”.

Spirituality in the “real world”

Experiencing soul or spirituality in the real world – at 9:00 a.m. Monday – means treating others with dignity and respect, kindness and compassion. It means we respect the world and all that it contains – its abundance of plant and animal life – by not polluting, destroying or degrading the planet’s flora or fauna by our daily decisions about how we live and work. Spirituality means telling the truth, being self-responsible, accountable, and open with all we deal with—at work, at home, at play, and in relationships—acting with full disclosure and honesty.

Spirituality means coming from a place of balance and harmony—a balance or alignment between what we think we feel, say, and do. And taking an inward approach to prioritizing our lives—work life, family life, personal life—in pursuit of activities that nourish and enrich every aspect of our lives. That we choose, honestly, sincerely and self-responsibly to focus on the well-being of our mind, body and spirit.

Spirituality means that we choose to live life as stewards of the planet, that we come from a place of “we”, not “me”, and constantly reflect and then act on what “we” want and need, as “we”. “I want to be known and appreciated, and how ‘we’ can contribute to the well-being of all of us. As a caregiver, we explore how we can make a difference for the greater good and how we serve to improve the well-being of others.

Passion and purpose are hallmarks of spirituality – our heart directs us and gives us direction. When we live from a heart-based place, then we are upfront, honest, sincere, and with integrity at work, at home, at play, and in relationships—no dishonesty, shortcuts, collusion, deception, or innuendo. . We live from a place of joy, enthusiasm, appreciation, collaboration and community.

Ingenuity, invention, imagination, discovery, creativity and innovation are spiritual and spiritual boosters. We seek new ways of doing and being. We exude courage and initiative. We are open to new ideas and are lifelong learners. Constant awareness is paramount.

Ultimately, soulfulness and spirituality are about being mindful—in our thoughts, words, and deeds. We seek an ever-increasing awareness of our motives and values. We are intentional at every moment. We see the “truth” of what is happening and know the difference between the “truth” and our predictions and fantasies that we make believe to be true. Consciousness is the lifelong process of growing awareness of “who I am,” “how I am,” and “what I am here to do with my life”—always seeking to bring our unconscious selves into conscious awareness.

It is my opinion that our lives at work, at home, at play, and in relationships are honestly and truly rewardingly served when we focus on ethics, values, integrity, and principles that emanate from this place of soul or spirit.

So some questions for self-reflection are:

  • Do you consider yourself a spiritual person? If so, how does your spirituality function in your life at work, at home, at play, and in relationships?
  • Do you ever think you want to make a change? If so, what would that change look like?
  • Do you think your self-worth is determined by your net worth?
  • What do you think the planet wants from you?
  • Are you a change maker? How so?
  • How do you nourish your mind, body and soul?
  • Does your life reflect harmony?
  • What do you not know about yourself?
  • Do you ever think about your spiritual nature?
  • What is necessary for your spiritual growth and development?
  • Do you ever feel guilty that you are not doing the things necessary for your spiritual growth?
  • How much time do you spend on self-reflection?
  • What was your experience of spirituality (ie, not religion or theology) growing up?
  • Can you imagine a world where people’s motives and intentions are spiritually based?
