North Luangwa Walking Safari
There are only three camps in North Luangwa National Park, which is a large area. This makes it ideal for those who want to get off the beaten track and find somewhere remote and exclusive. Kutandala Camp is a wonderful semi-permanent bush camp on the banks of the Mwaleshi River. It is run by the owner and hosts a maximum of six guests only. Each wet season, the area is washed by floods and rebuilt from scratch for each new season, running from June 1 to October 31. The owners of Kutandala are Rod and Guz Tether, a relaxed, welcoming yet dynamic duo. As well as vehicle-based game drives, they also offer walking safaris, on which you walk silently and keep voices in a hushed whisper to get closer to the game. Rod amazed us with his knowledge of birds and wildlife. Guz is an excellent lady, famous throughout the country for her cooking. The youngest members of the Kutandala team are Tethers’ two young sons, who charmed us with their remarkably lifelike animal impersonations. North Luangwa is also an important refuge for displaced black rhinos, with a 77 km long fence protecting 15 of these endangered animals.
South Luangwa National Park
South Luangwa is where the walking safari was created and there are a number of small village camps in the heart of the Park. From here, as well as vehicle-based games, you can go out on foot with a guide and armed guards. I stayed with Robin Pope Safaris and did fly-in camping, which involves spending a night (or two) in a simple but comfortable camp, set up before you arrive and dropped off afterwards. The camp moves daily and is always in a spectacularly beautiful remote location. Walking between the camps was fascinating; being so close to the game without the security of being in a vehicle was exciting. We saw a large herd of buffalo, 60 or more at very close range, and the great thing was that we did not cause them any alarm, but were able to watch them interact. At the same time I was relieved to have an armed ranger from the National Parks Authority nearby. The camp is a simple safari tent with a mattress frame. There is a separate toilet and shower tent a short distance from your tent. It was a wonderful experience after our day’s hike to arrive at camp and find a hot shower waiting before an evening by the campfire under the stars. After a hearty breakfast, the entire camp was dismantled, packed and moved. The team pride themselves on taking great care that no trace is left to harm the bush or wildlife once the camp is full.
Our guide was Debs Tittle, one of the most experienced trekking guides in Zambia, who was particularly adept at bringing out the less obvious things (insects, plants, trees and so on) that are often overlooked in favor of the more obvious. gave me. The walking was gentle and the group size kept to a maximum of four.
Canoe on the Zambezi River
Canoeing on a quiet, calm and peaceful river is a beautifully intimate way to discover the game of Africa. In one afternoon exploring the backwaters and waterways of the Zambezi, I saw an array of bee-eaters, kingfishers, egrets, egrets and brilliantly colored African yaks. We paddled past hippos as they looked on with bright eyes, saw an old male water buffalo swimming ahead and had to wait as a herd of more than fifty elephants crossed the river ahead, frolicking in the water, not completely oblivious to our silent presence. You don’t need to worry about your canoeing skills as a guide does all the hard work and knows where to go and – most importantly – where to avoid.
In northern Zambia, Sir Stewart Gore-Brown’s famous mansion has recently been restored by his grandson and is a very interesting addition to a Zambian itinerary, with the opportunity to mix game viewing with a cultural experience. Recently portrayed in Christina Lamb’s book Africa House, Shiwa House embodies the boundless optimism of the colonial settlers of the 1920s. Typically, guests stay three nights among the original furnishings of worn antiques, artwork and headdresses. trophy, with activities including guided walks, horse riding and boat trips on the lake where crocodiles are said to have eaten David Livingstone’s dog.
