Why Birds Lay Eggs Instead Of Giving Live Births

Humans, like most mammals, give birth to live young. Many other species such as reptiles and some fish are also born alive. Birds, however, are always born through the egg-laying process.

Animals that give birth to live young are called live animals. Viviparous translates to reproduction within the mother’s body. Animals that give birth by means of eggs are called oviparous. Loosely this translates to animals whose embryos develop outside the body and inside eggs. The animals that belong to this group are most fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects and of course birds.

The reason birds give birth through egg laying is rooted in the way they evolved as a species. Birds are one of the few non-insect animals that have the ability to fly. But they didn’t start out that way. Birds evolved from dinosaurs who, as far as we know, were land-bound. Early birds that evolved from dinosaurs did not have the ability to fly. However, as bird species evolved, they gained some abilities and lost others. In order for the birds to fly, they had to lose density and weight. Otherwise, there is no way they will be light enough to be supported by the winds. One of the main reasons that birds can fly is that they are so light, much lighter than a mammal of the same size.

As is evident in any living mammal, as the fetus grows inside the mother, the mother becomes heavier and heavier. If the birds were viviparous, it wouldn’t be long before the combined weight of mother and fetus would make the mother too heavy to fly. This would prevent it from being able to escape from predators, hunt for lots of food, etc. If, however, the fetus can be allowed to grow outside the body, in an egg, the problem is solved.

This is why, as soon as possible, the female bird will get rid of the egg inside her by placing it in a nest where it will be allowed to incubate and hatch. However, this method of birthing young comes with its own set of risks. Since the fetus is outside the body, the female and male couple must work together to protect the egg. This means that someone must always be standing by to prevent predators from taking advantage of a missing parent by raiding the nest and stealing eggs.
