The Zebra Family Tree

Everyone knows the zebra as a horse-like creature that has black and white stripes. But what most people don’t know is that horses, donkeys and zebras are all part of one large family known as the Equid family.

Equid family

Equid is the scientific term that refers to the group consisting of related animals. These are horses, donkeys and zebras. Unlike the first two, zebras live in the wild as they are not domesticated.

Scientific terms

To better understand the zebra family, you will need to know some biological terminology.

gender–this is the biological word used to describe a group of organisms with the same characteristics.

Subgenre: this is simply the subset of the genus.

Equus: scientific word for the genus zebra.

Hypotiger: The subgenus Equus containing different species of zebra.

Dolichohippus: Another Equus subgroup containing zebra species.

Origin

Zebras are believed to have descended from the early horse with the first species being Grevy’s. Then after that, other species started to appear

Different types of zebras

Most, if not all, animals have different species and this is true for zebras as well. There are two subspecies under the genus equus, hippotigris and dolichohippus. Two of the main species of zebras are found in the subgenus hypotigris and one in the subgenus dolichohippus.

The three main species

The Plains and Mountain Zebra species are both found in the subgenus Hippotigris and Grevy’s is the only one in the subgenus Dolichohippus. Although these are the main ones, there are other species that are rarely talked about or have disappeared.

Plains and Mountain Zebras

Plains zebra also known as Burchell’s zebra and mountain zebra also known as Hartman’s zebra both travel in small groups of seven; one male and six females. The joints of these zebras are very close and narrow.

Grevy’s zebra

This particular species is known to be the largest and travels in larger herds. Unlike the first two, social bonds are not close and tight as individual zebras do not live together for a long time.

location

The plains zebra is more common, not endangered and found in southern and eastern Africa. The mountain zebra, on the other hand, is only found in southwestern Africa and is endangered. Last but not least, Grevy’s is found in northern Kenya and Ethiopia and is the most endangered.
