Deer Senses and Camouflage

Sight, smell, sound,

“camouflage”

If a hunter is trying to avoid deer detection while archery, he must pay special attention to sight, scent, and sound. Deer hunting matches the hunter’s stealth with deer vigilance. You should check these three items for any flaws in your hunting game plan before you start your trip into the woods.

The white-tailed deer, along with many other large game animals are extremely alert in order to try to stay alive with evasive actions, but their vigilance stops at some point. A deer, of course, cannot lift its tail and run forever. Instead, a deer will assess the situation and make the decision whether to expend the energy to get the hell out of here or wait it out. When faced with various events in their environment, they may decide to stick around and be more alert until their curiosity is satisfied about anything strange that may have happened in their immediate area. By that I mean, they may have thought they saw you but aren’t quite sure, that is if you have good camouflage clothing and your surroundings are similar.

Scientists believe that deer eye sight is only capable of seeing in black and white, while deer are believed to see a range of colors. I truly believe that the hunter should try to blend into the forest terrain by wearing background colored clothing and being as inconspicuous as possible. There are many different types and styles of hunting daggers. Some of these are; Trebark, Mossy Oak, RealTree and one of my favorites is Sticks-N-Limbs. Covering your face with some kind of camo is also very important. Except in snowy conditions, an archery hunter who wears or uses any white material negates his camouflage because deer will quickly notice white objects. Regardless of a deer or other large game animal’s perception of color, it is movement that will elicit their ultimate response.

I believe that most or perhaps all large game animals are geniuses at interpreting scent. It’s easy; they smell you and run away! An archery hunter can fool a deer’s eyes, but it is much more difficult to go undetected by the deer’s sensitive nostrils. Trying to mask your scent with the scents of fox, skunk, or sex may be the only defense you have if you can’t stand upwind from a deer or other animal. However, during the rut, the archer may choose to go with the general alertness of a deer and aggressively attract bucks with pheromone-based sex lures. Hunting in the centers of trees several feet above the ground can keep his perfume pool dispersed in air currents above the deer’s level. In my nearly fifty years of hunting, this has been the best protection against sight and scent.

Deer constantly know the difference between the natural sounds of the forest and those they think represent danger. The metal slamming or slamming of a vehicle door and creaking tree stands can hinder archery hunting. But by keeping your archery equipment well maintained and in good working order, you may be able to keep all of these sounds from happening.
