Gladiator Combat Juggling Games (All the Different Versions)!

Gladiator (also known as Combat Juggling) is a favorite game of many attendees of Juggling Clubs and Conventions. It’s great fun to watch, and even better to be in the middle of it all.

The goal is to be the last person to juggle (which means you’ve won a round). This game is most commonly played with each person wielding 3 clubs, but can be adapted for any prop depending on the abilities of the people playing. The more people, the better! If you have a large number of people, you can play in teams, where the last person standing wins a point for their team.

The game starts by using the Gladiator’s Call. This is when everyone playing starts hitting their supports together and once a synchronized sound is made, everyone is ready and you can start cheating. The idea is to use any means necessary to continue cheating while trying to stop your opponents from cheating (without harming yourself or your opponents). The last person to juggle is the winner, and then you start over! This game can go on for hours as people come and go as they please. Most rounds only last a few minutes, so you never have long to wait until you have a game! It is also a very good way to improve your cheating skills.

When you’re out (eg dropped something), you’re expected to pick up your items (if possible without breaking the game) and leave the area so the game can continue without you.

Here are some other versions of Gladiator you can try:

Devil Stick Propeller Gladiators: To play gladiators with Devil Sticks, some games you are only allowed to make propellers (here the devil stick is constantly rotating around only one stick) or you can play with both hand sticks. You may be required to change which direction the propeller goes, or change hands, so you need to practice all 4 skills!

Buddy Gladiators: Gladiators with a joint cascade. The normal procedure is to put your spare arm around your partner’s shoulder or waist.

Each supporting gladiator: As easy as it sounds. This game suits people of mixed abilities as they can either juggle with clubs, spin a plate, devil stick or whatever and still participate in the game. Choose your weapon!

Balloon Modeling Gladiators: It’s made a balloon animal that should be able to hold a toothpick somewhere on it. If any part of your balloon pet bursts, then you’re out. The last balloon animal standing was the winner! This can (seems to) go on for hours (see picture below). The elbow of the hand holding the balloon animal should remain attached to the side of your body.

Gandini Gladiators: A version of gladiators where people arrange their clubs so that they form a hat that is held on their head. You should try to take your hat off to everyone!

Contact Juggling Gladiators: Competitors hold a 4-ball pyramid and try to knock at least one ball from other people’s pyramids until only one person remains. The elbow of the hand holding the pyramid must remain attached to the side of your body, and you must only push the balls of contact of the other person with your pyramid (no finger or hand pushing!)

Team Gladiators: Teams with equal numbers are organized. Everyone goes into battle and when there is only one person left on the battlefield, that team gets a point. You can add a rule that if there are 2 or more people from a team left at the end, that team gets more points. Lots of tactics used in this game and it’s great fun to watch!

Unicycle Gladiators: The winner is the person who stays on a bike the longest while trying to knock others off theirs! I’ve seen people on giraffe bikes (6 feet) win against their much shorter opponents!

Handicapped Gladiators: You can insist that people jump the entire time they’re playing this game, or that they have to constantly cheat a certain pattern (such as the mills mess)! You can deter people by asking them to put a stick between their legs (so now they have to walk everywhere) and you can also make people carry a stick under each arm if they are very capable of level the playing field!

Unicorn Gladiators: For this you need a Kendama (ball and spike wrapper). The kendama is worn so that the spike shows from the forehead. This involved the contestants turning their heads slightly back, which makes it harder for them to see their opponents! This game was introduced during the British Juggling Convention (BJC) 2011 in Huddersfield.

Top tips:

People tend to notice if you hang around the edges and avoid conflict, so even if you get away with this for a few rounds, you’ll soon be targeted! Sometimes it’s better to get in the middle of fights and look busy, but don’t approach the best players in the hope that they’ll knock each other out of the game!
