After a Tough Divorce Or Breakup, Animals Make Superior Company to Most Dates and Mates
In the dating world, it’s a jungle out there. People come and go, in and out of our lives. Some relationships last years, others only last weeks or months. Successful marriages are sacred and special. Then there are those of us whose marriages were not so lucky. We move forward and grow from experience. After years of enduring an unhappy marriage and going on many disappointing dates, I am very happily single and out of the friend race. Dates are easy to get when you want, but the fork is left, I’m done. Being independent, the single life is glorious and fulfilling. My world is full of love and happiness, living with animals instead of people. I haven’t given up dating, on the contrary, I’ve had enough of games and want a better and gentler life. It feels good and there is finally peace.
Living on a lake, there is nature all around me. Every morning and evening, the ducks and herons come to see what I am serving for them. The guy in the apartment next to me has turtles, which I feed flowers from my hibiscus plants. They see me and come crawling. When the seagulls come, they catch any food at all, in the air. Hungry little champions. It feels good to walk around the lake and see the wildlife; red-eyed slider turtles as big as dinner plates lying on a log, or baby whites following their mother with their big tennis racket feet tripping them as they walk. My camera is full of photos of the various animals I have come across on my walks. It’s relaxing not to argue with your spouse or rush home to make dinner. Freedom and peace feel luxurious and wonderful.
Horseback riding is rewarding for those of us who are thrill seekers. My weekly trips to a local barn to ride had to be temporarily stopped as I recovered from a herniated disc in my spine. How depressing it was not to be out in the sunshine, galloping and jumping those hyperbred horses. Soon, it will be good to start riding again, and I am ready (in spirit.) To come to the stall of a favorite horse and hear him say hello is encouraging. When I had my horse he always whined to me and loved to rub his big head against me for a good scratch. The teamwork and camaraderie between horse and rider is unique. You don’t have to have a good conversation, as the two of you bond mostly through touch and sight. In high school, my boyfriend had to wait while I went to ride my horse every day. It always came first. High school relationships came and went, but the horse was always there. And he was spoiled rotten, with carrot cakes on his birthday and apple pies every day. Leaving him to go to college was more painful than when I left my ex-husband.
We value our animals and it’s clear when you read various stories in the newspapers or look at pet-related magazines. Sometimes we hear about people fighting over who gets custody of the dog or cat. Bird Talk magazine even has a parrot “hub” for its bird-loving readers each month. Animals give us love that humans cannot, completely unconditional and without ulterior motives. They do not pretend, fake or judge. They just love. No one gives you dirty looks when you look less than attractive in the morning. This is why animals have a superior place in my heart to my previous relationships. Is your dog or cat patiently waiting for you to come home from work? The highlight of many pets’ days is when their owners come home.
Growing up, I hid in my bedroom with my cat to avoid my mother’s wrath. My cat was dear to me even if the family had difficulty showing affection. When relationships ended, my pets were there for me when friends couldn’t be. Animals enrich and improve our lives. It is better to have peace and love for a pet than to endure an unfulfilling and destructive relationship. My interest in dating has waned as I work and play with the animals in my life. You don’t need a friend to be happy. But the love of a faithful dog or cat makes life more satisfying and enjoyable. If you’ve left a relationship and are hurting, reach out and pet your pets. They will happily give you a loving ear… and a paw.
