Does God Want Us To Eat GM-Food?
A growing number of people in the US are careful to avoid GM (genetically modified) foods, but it is almost impossible to do so. Every trip down the aisles of a supermarket becomes more and more frustrating, as Ingredient labels have become cryptic and deceptive, so only experts can decipher them. This is of course no coincidence, the Food Industry has a vested interest in making Foods look healthy by disguising unhealthy ingredients. For example MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) has disappeared from labels, but not as an ingredient. But when the industry pointed out that consumers were throwing away products with MSG, they simply masked the labels as: Seasoning, Flavoring, Yeast Extract, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, and many other euphemisms. In fact, there are other tricks that the industry is using with the active help of the FDA which has decided that when MSG is used in a product ingredient, it does not have to be disclosed. So it seems it doesn’t take an Einstein to figure out that you break the quantity down into the Components of the various Components.
While at least one educated reader is able to see the deception on the labels, GM Ingredients are an entirely different problem. Because the FDA has decided that there is no difference between conventionally grown produce and GM produce and therefore GM Food does not need labeling. While the FDA continues to turn a blind eye to the many studies that prove otherwise, one must ask the simple question a first grader might ask: If GM-Food is identical, then why is it genetically modified? It really doesn’t take a Nobel laureate to figure out that when genes are modified, there is a difference. Would the Biotech Industry spend billions on something that is not changing?
But back to the supermarket, where it can be a futile effort to fill an everyday grocery cart without GM foods, no matter how vigilant the shopper may be. For example, almost all processed foods, including bakery items like bread, are made with Canola oil, almost all of which is from GM-Rapeseeds. Sometimes labels mask the term by simply listing vegetable oil, meaning canola, soybean or cottonseed oil, all of which are genetically modified. Then there’s the ubiquitous cheap sweetener HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) from GM Corn. Most breakfast cereals are GM. Now we expect the FDA and USDA to approve GM Apples, Oranges and even Salmon, and while the Biotech Industry Lobby is spending millions of dollars to bribe members on Capitol Hill, it is a foregone conclusion that this will happen. It’s not a matter of if, but when. Grassroots movements and Consumer Protection Organizations are sometimes successful in delaying approvals, but they cannot prevent them.
In the EU, more than a million signatures from citizens petitioning to stop new GM approvals were collected by Greenpeace and presented to EFSA (European Food Safety Agency), the EU’s equivalent of the FDA; who said “public opinion doesn’t matter”. EFSA had authorized 125 GM approvals since 1998. (gmwatch.eu 1 Dec 2010).
Worse is the Biotech giants collaborating with the US government to force poor nations to depend on GM crops, a fact that came to light through Wikileaks documents (gmwatch.eu 1 Dec 2010). Monsanto had previously tried to exploit Haiti’s devastated agriculture by donating hundreds of tons of genetically modified seeds that would have put Haitian farmers at Monsanto’s mercy forever. Not everyone understands the difference between “selective breeding” and “genetic engineering” of plants. Improving fruits and vegetables and adapting them to local conditions is something that has been done for as long as agriculture has existed. But genetic engineering that changes the DNA of a plant by inserting DNA from an Animal is a whole other matter, which raises fundamental questions: Was something missing from the Food that was given to mankind and populated and flourished the world for thousands of years?
Food provided by Nature fed the world since Adam and Eve, so what makes people “improve on creation” now? Industry advocates claim that GM is necessary to feed the world’s growing population, but the fact is that GM has completely failed to deliver on its promise. GM’s real goal is to monopolize seeds for corporate profits. Politicians are quick to allude to epoch-making engineering success in creating healthier food, such as rice with added vitamin A to prevent blindness in developing countries. So was the rice that Nature provided deficient in nutrients? Of course not, its over-intensive agriculture, soil erosion and nutrient depletion in the soil that created nutrient-deficient crops. GM simply exacerbates this problem by adding large amounts of pesticides that end up in the produce.
But the basic question that the consumer can ask is: Should I eat GM-Food or not, what was the intention of the Creators? We find the answers in the scriptures, in Genesis 1: 11-12 (NIV) we read
Then God said: “Let the earth bring forth vegetation: seed plants and trees on the earth bearing fruit with seed in it, according to their kinds.” And so it was. The earth produced vegetation: plants that bore seed after their kind, and trees that bore fruit with seed in it after their kind. And God saw that it was good.
So what God found good then is suddenly called into question? God did not say: For the moment it is good, but later I need the people I have created to improve what I have given. Anyone who believes in the God of Abraham, including Christians, Jews, and Muslims, would agree that God’s provision was perfect and there was no need for mankind to interfere. Sometimes tampering with Food is done for no real or good purpose, except that it can be done. As if apples weren’t just a perfect fruit in hundreds of varieties, some American inventors patented the “Granapple,” an artificially grape-flavored apple. This is a clear and completely redundant violation of the “after its kind” principle. Deuteronomy 22:9 (NIV) says:
Do not plant two kinds of seeds in your vineyard; if you do, not only the crops you plant, but also the fruit of the vineyard will be polluted.
What does “dirty” mean? A large number of studies and publications agree that genetically modified foods are not sustainable, they pose a threat to both our health and our environment. These threats include widespread crop failure, food mutations, allergic reactions, infertility, reduced nutritional value, the creation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, increased ingestion of herbicides and pesticides, and other potentially irreversible changes to our environment. It is very clear that GM Foods are not what we should be eating and the ignorance and denial is showing its results in increasingly poor health. The US, the capital of undeclared GM Food is a notable example, where life expectancy continues to decline and is now ranked a miserable 49th, ten years less than Japanese citizens. While it may not be possible to completely avoid GM Food because governments don’t want you to be able to identify and avoid it, we can at least support organizations that collect signatures for petitions against new approvals and provide information on GM developments. such as the Organic Consumers Association, gmwatch.eu, the Natural Health Alliance USA and many others.
