Renaming Your Greyhound Rescue

We have 2 rescued live hounds named Angel and Ares. We adopted Angel from Greyhound Friends of North Carolina. We are in the midst of finalizing Ares’ adoption from Northeast Ohio Greyhound Rescue. When we got both greyhounds from the greyhound rescue, they were still using their racetrack names, or some rehash of it anyway. I was disappointed when we were in the middle of adopting Angel years ago to find out her name was RC Miss Sissy Sue. I couldn’t imagine someone would name their dog something weird like that. I was resigned to being stuck calling her that for the rest of her days.

Fortunately, I decided that her race name is not set in stone. In fact, she didn’t even realize her racing name at all. You could have called her “Tiger,” “Dancing Josaphat,” or even “Dog,” and she would have answered them all the same—which was no answer. Then I made up that she had no name. I was surprised. I could name it whatever I wanted! It was then that I learned that greyhound rescuers don’t understand their race names. Trainers at the track or kennel usually don’t call their hounds by name, which means you can name your hound whatever you want.

Your Hound readily associates rewards for actions as a good thing. This understanding is what she will create as a catalyst to clone her actions again and again. You have to understand that your new hound doesn’t know her name the same way you and I understand our names. Your hound responds to her name as a command, nothing more. When you use her name repeatedly for short periods of time, she seems to accept that her name is a command for her attention. Think of it as a person on the street saying “Hey!” or when someone says “look here”. This is basically what your hound associates as her name. She perceives her name as a command demanding her attention.

Learning your new name with the needle simply requires repetition and reward. Follow the recipe below and you will be amazed at the quick results you will get.

Start by saying her new name whenever you are talking directly to your hound. Try to speak with an accent when you use her name. Reward her with a tasty treat when she responds by calling her name. Take time to pet him as well as a nice reward. I’ve never met a hound that didn’t like to be petted. It’s that simple. Be understanding. It will take time for your hound to make that association with the name. As quickly as a few days later, you’ll discover more answers when you call her name.

While teaching your hound her new name, DO NOT yell, scream, raise your voice in a threatening manner, or use her name in a negative manner. DO NOT intimidate your hound while using his name, or at all for that matter. These occurrences will be perceived by your new hound as a bad thing that will set back the training you are trying to accomplish.

One aside I’d like to make is that before you start teaching your new hound her name, you need to understand her history. If you are rescuing a retired runner from a previous home, they most likely have a name they already identify with. While you could certainly use the same ideas above to rename it, this would not be supported.
