Emerald Tree Boa Care Sheet
Boa emerald tree, scientifically known as Corallus caninus is a non-venomous snake found mainly in South America, deep in the rainforests. Here is a care sheet for the Emerald Boa.
Vivarium: Since the Emerald Boa is a very arboreal snake, a suitable vivarium needs height and strong branches/seats for the snake to climb. They have a very slow metabolism and will spend long periods wrapped around a single branch. Therefore, a very large enclosure is not required. A 36 inch cube style is ideal, and the key to successfully keeping and breeding these snakes is simplicity – use a plain substrate or paper towel, no hiding box (as these boas will curl around a branch rather than hide) and a large bowl of water to keep the humidity up.
Food: The baby emerald tree boa needs a prey item of a suitable size (no larger than the snake’s girth) every fourteen days. Newborn boas need a complete bowel movement after each feeding. As an adult, the Emerald Boa needs a feed every twenty-one to twenty-eight days. Adult cats need in this case a complete stool for every two to three meals. The size of the prey offered should be of the small size, certainly smaller than the snake’s girth. After the small animal is given to the snake, you should not notice anything more than a slight enlargement of the boa’s body. Overfeeding large game, or too many meals, will cause obesity and digestive problems, to which this species is particularly prone.
Temperature: When it comes to temperature, there are actually three cycles you need to consider. That is the maintenance cycle, which starts six days after feeding and lasts until the next time you feed the emerald. The temperature in this case should be between 72F and 84F. The second cycle is the feeding cycle. The average temperature of this cycle should also be around 82F. In any case, the temperature should not rise above 90F before and after feeding time. The third and last cycle is the mating cycle. During breeding and reproduction time, the temperature should be at 86F during the day and near 70F at night. This cycle lasts 12 weeks. After that, it should go back to the normal maintenance cycle.
The humidity. Humidity is very important for all reptiles, but especially for the Emerald Tree Boa. During the day, the humidity should be close to 70-80% and at night close to 45-60%. The emerald aquarium must be kept sufficiently moist throughout its life cycle, ensuring proper health. These boas are prone to dehydration and allow humidity to drop below 50% for long periods. it can cause serious health problems and even death. During the mating cycle, it is recommended to increase the daily humidity to 70-90% and the night humidity to 55%. Nighttime humidity levels should be kept low because this allows the vivarium to dry out, minimizing potential bacterial infections.
Shedding Period: Emeralds will normally shed without difficulty as long as the humidity is kept at an optimum level. If your boa has shedding problems, you should place the boa in a snake bag, along with a towel soaked in warm water. Place the bag with the snake in a plastic tub and place it in a warm place – about 85 F. Keep the snake in this condition for several hours so that it stays moist and the unshed skin is saturated. This can be repeated if necessary.
The Emerald Tree Boa is an amazing animal. Although not suitable for beginners, experienced snake owners will enjoy seeing these wonderful snakes. They do not tolerate handling and have large teeth which they are not afraid to use, so using a snake hook is essential. If you want a snake you can afford, often go for a Boa Constrictor, but if you want a truly magical animal and a great snake, and are able to meet his careful care regimen, the Emerald Tree Boa may be for you. you.
