Nine Identifications of a Spiritual Person

What is the most desirable trait in a man? Previous studies have suggested that physical attractiveness, intelligence and wealth are the most desirable traits in a man. However, a new study to be published in the November issue of the British Journal of Psychology suggests that a person’s altruistic tendencies are the most desirable trait in human beings. Lead researcher Tim Phillips, of the Behavioral and Ecology Research Group at the University of Nottingham in England, said:

“Evolutionary theory predicts competition between individuals, and yet we see many examples in nature of individuals putting themselves at a disadvantage to help others… In humans, especially, we see individuals prepared to put themselves at considerable risk for helping individuals they don’t know without a problem. visible reward”.

This should not come as a surprise as we always knew that selflessness is always valued by the human race. People who lay down their lives for their country, humanity or for a righteous cause without any selfish interest are often worshiped as God by man. Buddha, Jesus and Gandhi are some examples of such personalities.

However, this open secret of man has always been misused by clever and unscrupulous people. All political leaders promise their citizens the desire for selfless service as they know it gets votes. There has never been a shortage of selfish people who have deceived humanity under the guise of selflessness.

So often, it is difficult to identify a selfless person.

Are we selfless?

While the theory of evolution predicts that every man is a competitor of others and fights with others in the battle for survival, it is amazing to find people who even lay down their lives for others.

Why do some people give their lives for others?

We can all claim to be selfless. After all, we consume only a fraction of what we earn. The father in a typical family spends most of his salary on his children and his wife and enjoys only a small portion of his income. Even the mother spends almost all her time and energy raising her children with no return. However, hardly anyone considers such acts selfless.

Doing good for the family is quite normal in humans, even in animals. The reason is that it is not an act of altruism if we serve ourselves. In a civil society, a family is considered as an extension of the self as man cannot survive alone on the planet. The family provides love and support to each individual in the family, so one is repaid by what one gives to one’s family. Further, every person receives such love, affection and support from their parents; therefore he must give what he has received. Love for the child is extremely natural for parents; therefore doing something for them is not considered selfless as children also give back to their parents what they received during their childhood.

Why then do people help a stranger knowing full well that they can get nothing in return?

Spiritualism: The root of selfishness

The answer to this question is that every person is by nature spiritual. In Indian philosophy, the soul of the person is called “Atman” while God is called “Paramatman” (Universal Soul). Therefore, a part of God resides in each person. Even in Christianity the chapel of the Holy Spirit is present in all beings and is considered to be another form of God.

However, most people do not have this realization and see themselves as different from others. Such people cannot do anything for others as they feel that such action is a waste as they get nothing in return.

However, a person who sees God in everyone or sees everyone as an extension of himself actually helps himself by helping others. No one expects anything in return when they serve themselves.

So, the root of selflessness is the awakening of spirituality in a man or woman that enables a person to do selfless work. We all want to identify such a person as they can be trusted for guidance and help. We also want to become such a person to gain love and trust from people.

However, it is not easy to identify the spiritual person, as many material people disguise themselves in the clothing of the spiritual person.

One can easily identify a spiritual person if he or she has the following nine characteristics in their personality.

1. Synergy between words and actions

The actions of a spiritual person are always in harmony with his words. He only speaks what he really believes in. If one only observes the lives of most people who call themselves spiritual, one can immediately notice the difference between their words and their deeds. While they may preach equality, they still treat themselves as superior to others. While they may ask people to live simple lives, they themselves live in good houses and wear expensive clothes and ornaments. A spiritual person does not say anything that is impractical. He demonstrates the practicality of his principles by following the words he speaks.

2. Self-realization

A distinction must be made between a scholar and a spiritual person. Any person with a good memory can remember every word of a scripture and prove anything by the force of logic. A researcher always supports his argument with some reference to other studies or writings. However, a spiritual person is a self-realized person whose knowledge has come from within. Thus, instead of “following knowledge” he has “become knowledge” as his person has become one with the Spirit. So his explanation comes directly from his soul and convinces the person instead of asking people to be convinced because someone said so, or something is written in a scripture or some study has proven something.

3. Peace

A spiritual person is one whose soul has become one with God or Spirit. Thus he can know the world from a much wider perspective. His mind is at peace like water in the depths of the sea. He knows that everything that happens in the world has a logic to it. He can know cause and effect through his intuition. Therefore he is always at peace and does not feel disturbed by the mundane things of the world which are like waves on the surface of a sea.

4. Indifference to physical appearance

Spirituality is complementary to materialism as the soul is complementary to the body. He who focuses on the body cannot focus on the soul. Thus, a spiritual person is indifferent to the physical appearance of himself and others. He does not identify the person by his outer covering, but by his soul. Appearance is unimportant to him. Therefore, if a person wears designer clothes and focuses on being physically attractive, he is less likely to be spiritual. No wonder most spiritual people wear beards which actually cover the physical attraction of the body.

5. Unconditional love

Love is the most important character of a spiritual person. He does not hate anyone, including the criminal and the terrorist. It may seem strange and impossible to the common man, but not to the spiritual person. Just as we all like everything about ourselves, including our not-so-perfect bodies, in the same way for a spiritual person there is no “other” so he identifies with his enemies as well.

6. Equality and Justice

God has created everyone equal even though he has given each a different role. However, man placed material value on the human being based on supply and demand. For example, the President of a nation is valued much more than the common sweeper because there is only one position of President and a large number of applicants. Whereas, there are a lot of wipers with few applicators. However, it cannot be denied that both are necessary for the nation. A spiritual person, therefore, never differentiates people on the basis of religion, caste, economic status or position in society, as he is able to see everyone with the same eye. In the Gita, Lord Krishna says,

A wise man, because of true knowledge, sees with equal vision a learned and gentle Brahman (scholar), a cow, an elephant, a dog, and a dog-eater (outcast).

7. No passion

A spiritual person is never in a hurry as he has no lust or passion for anything. A man with passion always needs to do something, so he feels restless all the time. However, a spiritual person knows his role in the scheme of things and does what is in the best interest of the world. He is a yogi who has complete control over his body, senses and mind. Gita says,

He who sees inaction in action and action in inaction, he is enlightened among men. He is a yogi, he has done all that is necessary.

8. Humility

A spiritual person is always humble as he sees God in every person or considers everyone as an extension of himself. He knows that he is merely an instrument in the hands of God and he has been sent to this world to perform a certain function. There can never be an element of pride in him.

Can a car be proud of its function?

Shouldn’t credit for the car’s operating performance go to its designer? Why then should a man feel proud of his achievements?

The need for humility is shown by Jesus himself when he washed his disciple’s feet. The Bible tells the story as follows

He (Jesus) arose from supper and laid aside his clothes; took a towel and covered himself. After that, he poured water into a basin, began to wash the disciples’ feet and wipe them with the towel with which he was wrapped. (John 13:4-5)

9. Compassion and Forgiveness

A spiritual man is more forgiving because he knows that everyone will be judged according to their works by God. He never puts himself in God’s place and judges a person by his standards. Thus, even if someone has wronged him or wronged someone else, he always seeks forgiveness from God for him. Thus, instead of hating a person whose action is not in accordance with his desire or according to scripture, he shows compassion for everyone.

Jesus himself demonstrated the act of forgiveness when despite being crucified by the Jews, he asked God for forgiveness for him. He prayed

“Forgive them, father, they do not understand what they are doing.”

Spirituality is for everyone

Man is born spiritual. Jesus in his first teaching said:

“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’

Man suffers when he ignores the need for spiritual awakening in him and tries to live on bread alone like any other animal. Anyone can hear God’s words if he awakens his spiritual self. Thus, a less spiritual person must identify and learn the words of God from people who have evolved higher in their spiritual journey. The nine identifications discussed in this article can help a person identify the truly spiritual person and undertake the journey that is towards God or Spirit. The development of these Nine characters in itself can make a person spiritual and selfless.
