African Story Telling – Lessons and Entertainment

In the old days in Africa, we taught ourselves values through stories. We had a lot of history. We used all the methods we could then. Some stories were songs that talked about the heroic struggles of our heroes. We had heroes that everyone in the community could identify with. We had animal stories through which we taught our children the virtues of life such as honesty, honor, loyalty and courage. Animals represented different things and concepts. For example, from my part of the world, we had turtle stories that were told as sly, sly, sometimes hilarious, but always with an underlying lesson for us. It was natural every evening after the day’s work to sit by the fireplace, or under a large tree, and listen to the escapades of the tortoise. Yet in all these stories of the turtle, we were woven a thread of an ethical code. It was common at the end of each story for the storyteller to ask us children who were listening what the lesson of the story was.

In the broader sense at the government level, we had festivals, which were used to teach leaders the essence of honor and integrity. Such festivals were usually a kind of masquerade in which errant leaders were thrown into songs, dramas and such devices that drove the message home. It was understood that the actors of any mask could not be punished. The victim, who felt too ill to bathe, would naturally stay at his farm for days and weeks depending on the severity of the satire. He returned to the larger community after a while hoping that everyone had forgiven or forgotten that transgression. Note, however, that in his anxiety not to have the same experience next year, he would change his ways.

The society was friendly, knew its place, and the government was mostly benevolent and inclusive. Storytelling had its uses and was a simple form of entertainment as well as an instrument of learning. However, alas, the story is radically different today in my part of the world. The only practical stories we can tell each other these days are poverty, disease (some really weird ones our ancestors never heard of) and insensitivity to each other. In those golden years, a thief could not find help anywhere unless he changed his ways. His family disowned him. His community would reject him, and however wealthy he became, he was never given a chieftaincy title. The community will look at him with derision if he tries to contribute to the common wealth of the people.

Today, there is no more history. No more sitting by the big tree to look at the moon, sing to the moon or tell stories of the turtle’s escapades. No more moonlight games, wrestling, folk songs or beauty pageants in which we show off our African hairstyles. What we have now is television that has made monkeys out of the dignified African, fashion that has stripped us and left us naked. Thieves take chieftainships now and sometimes set the course of a once proud and self-possessed people.

We can still go back to the storytelling days. We can still use stories to change our concepts into something noble and uplifting. We may not be able to physically sit by the big tree, but we can still tell stories about honor and integrity, because these stories are as timeless as the virtues they preach. It is the essence of true civilization. Do we still have good storytellers?
