Tanzania Camping Budget Private Or Joining Safari Explained From Monkey Territory to Tsetse Flies
Tanzania Camping Budget Private or Joining Safaris are still the real authentic African Safari. Firstly we would like to inform you that some of the campsites in the National Parks of Tanzania, especially in Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Park are outside the Parks.
This is because camping within the Parks is not safe.
There are so many elephants and tsetse flies in Tarangire during the seasons and in Lake Manyara for many monkeys. You can lose your 6 days safari food in just five minutes and there is nothing you can do because you are inside the monkey’s territory.
Animal Kingdom. Here nature rules and human requirements are not a priority!
For Budget Tanzania Camping Safari, we usually use both 4 x 4 Land Rover / Land Cruiser / Minibus depending on the safari schedule and season. Most of our customers prefer to use Land Cruisers in the dry season and Land Rovers in the wet season between April – June every year.
That’s because the Land Rover is always in four-wheel drive when driving in the mud, but the Land Cruiser lets you engage all four wheels when you need it. Also the Land Cruiser is easier to grip because of the rear springs while the Land Rover doesn’t stall as easily because all front and rear tires are protected by coil springs.
Animals usually drink water early in the morning and late in the evening. Such activities can be seen either in Lake Manyara or Serengeti National Park. The Serengeti is much better because it allows for very early game drives even before breakfast. It is possible to include walking safari especially for those people doing private safari.
This is charged directly or if you insist we include it in the price. Of course we will show the cost separately for those who are joining the safari. Not all customers want to go on a walking safari. Walking safari can be arranged at the campsite eg Twiga Camp / Fig Tree Camp / Zion Camp and Popo Camp at Lake Manyara and Tarangire.
We usually take 4 people in a normal 6 seater Land Cruiser or Land Rover for those doing camping safaris and 6 people in an 8 seater extended vehicle. We reserve other backseats for extra camping gear, eg mattresses, blankets, tents and sheets.
TANZANIA CAMPING SAFARI ITINERARY SAMPLE
DAY 1: Arusha-Tarangire
You will be picked up at around 09:00 and head to Tarangire National Park for the game drive. Tarangire is most spectacular during the dry season when thousands of animals migrate into the park from the dry surrounding Maasai steppe to use the permanent water supply of the Tarangire River.
You can see herds of elephants, numbering over a hundred. Tarangire is also known for its tree pythons, which are easily seen. The animal population in the dry season rivals that of the Serengeti with wildebeest, zebra, eland, hartebeest, buffalo, gerenuk, long-eared oryx and flocks of birds of various species.
Prime game viewing is from July to November.
The famous and giant baobab trees cover the park, their branches look just like the roots. Some of the baobab trees are over 300 years old. Legend has it that a displeased god turned them upside down at the time of creation. All meals and overnight at Zion Campground.

DAY 5: Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha. Breakfast around 0600. Take Picnic Lunch with you and drive 15 minutes to the Ngorongoro Crater floor for the game drive. See the various resident animals on the crater floor.
The largest continuous caldera in the world, Ngorongoro has an area of 260 kilometers and a depth of 610 meters. The crater provides a protected habitat for thousands of mammals and birds. The whole day is spent on the crater floor seeing lion, hyena, wildebeest, zebra, black rhinoceros and many species of small antelope.
The Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area is located between the Serengeti and Lake Manyara. It is home to the famous Ngorongoro Crater, which is the largest continuous caldera in the world. The crater is a spectacular setting in which to experience your African safari. Some scientists claim that before it erupted, the Ngorongoro Crater – the largest intact caldera in the world – would have been higher than Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest point in Africa.
Covering an area of just 260 square kilometers (100 square miles), the 600-meter (1,969-foot) deep Crater is home to a permanent population of more than 30,000 animals. It is one of the few places in Africa where you have a very good chance of seeing the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant) during a game drive.
The local Maasai are allowed to graze their cattle on the Crater floor and it is not unusual to see Maasai cattle and buffalo grazing alongside the lion just meters away. There are around 1,000 lions in the Crater, approximately 20 black rhinos, and the spectacular Lerai Forest is one of the best places in Africa to spot leopard. This is one of the natural wonders of the world.
Picnic lunch at the crater. Afternoon before 430pm drive to Arusha where you will be dropped off at your chosen hotel.
