05 Days in Mount Kenya climbing Sirimon – Route Chogoria

Distance: 90 km | Difficulty: Moderate | Start/End: Nairobi

Much more scenic than Naromoru and is on the dry side of the mountain which offers some of the best hiking. Climb through the forest on a broad ridge approach to the summit area. The route starts on the northwest side of the mountain near Nanyuki. Access is ample and the lodge facilities are the best this side of the mountain

Day 1: Nairobi/Sirimon/Judmier Camp (Old Moses Camp) 3-4 hours, 9 km, 860 m climb

Depart Nairobi at 8am to Nanyuki town for lunch, taking about 4 hours. Continue to Sirimon Gate, 1 hour, 2440 m. From the gate follow the road as it winds uphill through the forest which becomes heath land after about 3 hours. About 3 1/2 hours from the gate, the track turns right at Judmier Camp, 3300m for dinner and overnight, L, D

Day 2: Judmier Camp/Shipton Camp 6-7 hours, 14 km, 900 m climb

After breakfast, follow the path uphill, bearing left at the junction. After an hour from Old Moses Camp, the track crosses the Ontulili River. Go right contouring across the moorland and past Liki North and continue up into the Mackinders Valley where there are panoramic views up the valley towards the main peaks. Dinner and overnight at Shipton Camp, 4200m, B,L,D

Day 3: Shipton Camp – Acclimatization

Spend the day acclimatizing. Hike to Kami Hut to Hauseberg Lakes (Hauseberg Tarn and Nanyuki Tarn). Return to Shipton for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Shiptons/Point Lenana/Mount Meru Bandas (Porta Chogoria) 6 hours, 14 km, climb 785 m

Leave at 3am on a steep stone quarry that runs through a cliff clearing a prominent section towards the lower point of Hall Tarns arriving at Lenana Point at 6.30am, taking about 3 hours. After sunrise, descend to Mintos Hut, 2 hours, for breakfast and further hours down to Mount Meru Bandas, 2950m, for dinner and overnight, B, L, D

Day 5: Chogoria Bandas/Chogoria/Nairobi

Descend 2 hours, 15 km into the forest clearing to catch a 4×4 transfer vehicle to Chogoria village where you will connect with your transfer vehicle to Nairobi, B, L.

A typical Mount Kenya 05 day trip is recommended and prices range from $675 per person, with an additional day at $115 per person. Acclimatization at the lower levels is a very necessary commodity to ensure no less than 98% chance of reaching the summit, Lenana Point at 4985 M.
