Sometimes we get down on ourselves.

Maybe we didn’t perform as well as we wanted in a job presentation, didn’t do all the studying we could for an exam or review, needed more time, and turned out a product that was only good — not the best.

When this happens, most people, including myself! We feel as though we have failed our own expectations and not met our standards. And maybe that’s true, maybe we could have taken a little more time to prepare that PowerPoint for a presentation, studied a little more, or spent more quality time developing a killer product — all of these things, we could have done them and the end result would have been better.

These are our lessons, the reason we have them is to grow. So let’s look at it that way – as a growing experience – and STOP being hard on yourself!

Being hard on yourself will only bring you to a dark place where the only thing around are question marks about your potential success. What will happen to me? Who noticed that I messed up? Will I ever do what I want to do? Get out of the negativity and your life will get easier, I promise.

This does not change with your fitness and health goals. If you become your own worst drill sergeant—yelling and screaming at your latest mess—you won’t build the positive support within yourself to keep a healthy and glowing fitness program going. I promise you this too.

You can see how this affects professional athletes all the time. Watch tennis and pay close attention to how the players react to their missed shots. If a player hits the ball at the net and reacts badly, chances are that the next three or four contests will have more mistakes on his or her part. What is happening is this…

His conscience is to be a drill sergeant. He’s yelling at the player telling him to stop screwing up! While he’s still yelling, he’s still playing tennis and so now he’s listening to his drill sergeant and trying to hit a first serve that’s over 100mph! Talk about some serious tasks! These conversations are negative and counterproductive.

Instead, to avoid this reproach, he must admit his mistake and calmly let it go. How? Breath. Focus more. Don’t correct his movement or position, just focus on what he’s doing – in this case hitting a tennis ball. I guarantee he won’t land the next few shots.

Same thing with baseball pitchers. You’ve seen guys miss a few shots and then start getting in their heads and cursing and cursing on the mound. What happens is the same, the drill sergeant starts talking and concentration is out the window. This is when they give up home runs and unintentional walks.

Master pitchers have learned to shrug off bad pitches and focus on the task at hand. I’ve seen too many games where a great pitcher misses a pitch and gives up a home run, then comes back and shuts the other team out for the rest of the innings. Pitchers like these are masters not only of throwing the ball hard, but also of concentration.

You can’t do everything perfectly.

If you get off track, take a day to breathe, look at your goals, and then refocus your focus. For many of us, fitness and health require a lifestyle change that creates lasting habits! You will slip over and over again, so don’t kill yourself.

Here’s a great story my coach, Nick, told me when I was struggling with being too hard on myself.

There was a young boy named Michael, about 10 years old, whom Nick had mentored for a short period of time. Michael was overweight and having an extremely difficult time at school. He struggled with math and was a grade or two behind in reading. He just didn’t feel good about himself, and other kids were starting to pick on him because of his reading deficiencies and, of course, his weight.

Nick had met Michael several times and now the issue they were discussing was his performance in school. After pulling some teeth to get Michael to talk about his problems at school and with the other kids, Nick wasn’t sure how to proceed with the session. So he asked Michael a very blunt and direct question. “How do you feel about yourself?”

Michael responded with this: “I feel like a huge failure.”

“Whoa, whoa, wait a minute,” Nick said, “What makes you feel that way?”

“I don’t know, I just am.”

“Well, Michael, why don’t you tell me about something you really like.”

Michael looked up at the ceiling. “I like animals!”

“And tell me, what is your favorite animal?”

“The Cheetah!” Michael nearly jumped out of his seat.

“Excellent!” Nick matched his enthusiasm, “and tell me about the cheetah.”

After a double time, Michael began to tell Nick all about the cheetah, how it walks, how it eats, how it sleeps, when it sleeps, what it eats again – to the point that an unwary Nick would have kicked himself. to ask this question at all.

When Michael seemed to be closing in, Nick gently cut him off.

“Wow, you sure know a lot about cheetahs don’t you? You mentioned something I want to talk about. You said cheetahs eat zebras, right?”

“Yes, and antelope, and …”

“Well, Michael, when the cheetah goes out and hunts, so you know how many times he gets the prey and can have dinner?”

Michael thought for a minute and then shouted, “All the time!”

Nick’s face became more serious, knowing that Michael was wrong, and he slowly taught Michael his lesson, “That’s not true, Michael. Cheetah is lucky if he gets to eat once or twice a week . He shoots many times and doesn’t catch a thing. Did you know that?”

“No I didn’t”

“Michael, Cheetah is a very special animal because it keeps trying all the time, day after day so that it can eat. It can miss its dinner 4 or 5 times a week. Now can you call a cheetah a big fat failure to not be successful every time?”

Michael picked up on the lesson that Nick was trying to teach him and began to perform better in school.

We can’t be at our peak all the time, and when we’re not, we absolutely can’t punish ourselves for it. Be more like Cheetah, go out every day knowing you are doing what you need to be successful.

If you fail, take a breath and come back more focused the next day. You will succeed, I’m sure of it!

How to be a Cheetah

Here are the tools that will allow you to tell your drill sergeant that he or she better make sure we don’t forget our business meetings that interfere with our fitness and health successes!

First step: When you start listening to the drill sergeant, listen to him speak for a short time. Listen to what he says. They will probably be like things like this “You idiot…” or “I just don’t trust you…” or “Why can’t you ever keep a commitment to…” For this step, just be aware that it is happening so you can recognize it when it happens again.

Second step: Tell your drill sergeant that you’re thankful he’s around. Seriously. Thanks for sharing his thoughts because the same drill sergeant is the one that gets you out of bed in the morning (he’s not all negative!).

Third step: Take a few deep breaths.

Fourth step: Ask your mind to switch to the next thought. If the next thought is just as negative and demeaning, repeat the four steps!

When you master this, you’ll be able to deal with your workout sergeant easily and quickly before the self-doubt that can ruin your chances of reaching your ultimate fitness goals starts to set in!
