The country is well-known mainly because of its terrible recent history, and you might think that Rwanda should be more of a space for no government organization than for travelers. Nowadays, nothing is less true. Rwanda has wonderful people, breathtakingly beautiful lakes, challenging mountains, stunning landscapes, perfect climate, rare monkey species, great roads, express buses, good and cheap food and beer, various accommodation options, fast internet, few tourists outside the gorillas – houses, you will find them all in Rwanda, a safe and yet to be discovered backpacker’s haven!

Due to its small size, Rwanda’s attractions are close to each other and can be reached quite easily and safely.

1. KIGALI CITY: A GREAT PLACE TO EXPERIENCE AN AFRICAN CAPITAL

Kigali is an interesting mix of rural and urban city, overflowing on a hilly facing terrain. New construction is everywhere and large mansions stand side by side with mud brick huts and poor roads. It has a quiet feel and the center is located in the hilltop space. It feels safe and easy to get around by foot or minibus… lots and new. For a little more taxis can take you anywhere without breaking the bank. Kigali is a nice place to experience an African capital.

2. KGALI GENOCIDE MEMORIAL CENTER IN GISOZI

During the Rwandan genocide in 1994, over a million people were killed. An estimated 250,000 died on the streets and in homes, churches and hospitals in Kigali alone. The Kigali Genocide Memorial Center contains ten mass graves – a burial ground for almost all the victims, who were killed in the Kigali region. After the genocide, mass graves were being discovered around the city. It was decided to create a single monument/burial place where the victims can be laid to rest with dignity, this is now their final resting place. The memorial houses a children’s section, a particularly powerful experience to read about children – how they lived and how they died. Among other things, she traces how things got so bad, how the ideology of genocide emerged, how the tragedy could have been avoided, and how the world repeatedly ignored the signs and warnings. Some of the genocide survivors are trained as guides at the center. Open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. Entry is free, but there is a donation box at the door. The place really breaks your heart!

4. MOUNTAIN GORILLA ADDITIONS

A Mountain Gorilla Trekking is the pinnacle of all wildlife experiences available in Africa and Rwanda is undoubtedly the best place for it. People are limited to spending only one hour with the Gorillas and expect to walk for two to four hours to see them. These extraordinary primates fall into four groups that have been learned over decades; it is a must-see in Rwanda. Don’t miss spending an hour with these magical creatures. It requires advance planning and contacting the National Park or a local tour operator to check the latest system they have implemented regarding how you get a permit – but it’s all worth it. Also, don’t be put off by the price – a high price is needed to ensure gorilla protection is economically viable for the local area.

5. CLIMBING THE MOLE

The national park office offers guided climbing to the top of 2 volcanoes among the 5 of the Virunga chain, Visoke (3711 m) and Karisimbi (4705 m – the highest).

The climbs to the peaks are not technical and can be done by skilled climbers. The scenery is amazing! However, the trek to the summit of Karisimbi is an overnight trek and should be properly prepared.

6. NYUNGWE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

This national park is a preserved part of the rainforest, which is home to a total of 13 species, including humanity’s closest relative, the chimpanzee, as well as the handsome L’Hoest monkey and the hundred-strong bodies of the gracefully acrobatic pigeon of Angola. The most important ornithological site in Rwanda, Nyungwe is home to almost 300 bird species of which two dozen are restricted to a small patch of montane forest in the Albertine Rift. Please come with your own car or book a tour with a local tour operator, otherwise it is very difficult to get to and from the site. You can camp there and pitch a tent, but you should consider bringing all your food and water with you as facilities are limited. The entrance fee has increased recently, so check the current fees.

7. AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK

Akagera is Rwanda’s best national park – very useful help to find all the animals in the park – mainly giraffes, zebras, antelopes, baboons, buffaloes, hippos and crocodiles.

8. RUSUMO FALLS

Rusumo is a magnificent and spectacular waterfall of the Akagera River, part of the most distant headwaters of the Nile River. The waterfall is located in the eastern part of Rwanda on the border with Tanzania. If you happen to cross the border into Tanzania at Rusumo, don’t forget to see the Rusumo Falls.

9. BEAUTIFUL LAKE KIVU

Beautiful Lake Kivu is a large freshwater reservoir that marks the western border with DR Congo and one of Africa’s Great Lakes. The lake is in the Albertine Rift, part of the Great Rift Valley. Lake Kivu drains into the Ruzizi River, which flows south into Lake Tanganyika. Under the lake there are large reserves of about 55 billion cubic meters of dissolved methane gas, which have not been exploited. Lake Kivu is a tourist hub, safe for swimming (but just ask instead to be absolutely sure). There are beautiful beaches, wonderful scenery and the sunsets are regularly stunning. There are some great places to stay by the lake such as Kibuye and -especially-Gisenyi near the DR Congo border.

10. BUTARE CITY IN HUYE

The most popular tourist attraction in Butare is the excellent National Museum, which houses perhaps the best ethnographic collection in East Africa. The rooms are spacious, without too much clutter of distracting memorabilia. This makes tagged exhibits easy to appreciate and enjoy. The absorbing displays of traditional artefacts are illuminated by a fascinating selection of turn-of-the-century monochrome photographs, providing insight not only into pre-colonial lifestyles but also into Rwanda’s subsequent development as a modern African state. Here Intore dancers can be commissioned to perform, but this is not a good deal for a single traveller. If a band is present, the price would definitely be worth it as shows are few and far between.
