Marsa Alam – An Untamed Divers’ Paradise On The Egyptian Red Sea Riviera

Marsa Alam is Egypt’s southernmost Red Sea resort, located three hours’ drive south of Hurghada on Egypt’s Red Sea coast. It is served by its own airport, conveniently located just ten minutes drive from Coraya Bay and Port Ghalib where you find the best tourist hotels.

Diving is the main activity in Marsa Alam, unsurprisingly as there are no less than twenty-five inshore and offshore reefs in the area, which are blessed with crystal clear waters and sixty meter visibility. Until recently, most dives were organized on live boats, but now there are very popular and excellent diving schools in Marsa Alam. Emperor are based in Port Ghalib, taking divers to the best dive sites based on their local knowledge of the area.

Abu Dabbab is one such area, unfortunately usually missed by liveaboard divers. This area of Marsa Alam gives divers a unique opportunity to see the dugong or manatee in its natural seagrass habitat. Green turtles also grace the site, a common feature of the Red Sea.

Wadi Lahami is the destination for Sataya Reef where you can expect to see several large pods of spinner dolphins, and some pods can consist of over a hundred members. This is a world class reef system and it is easy to swim with the dolphins here as the horseshoe shaped reef is surrounded by sand, about ten to twenty meters keeping the dolphins close to the surface.

Swimming with the dolphins in Sataya is an unforgettable experience and if you are someone who is forever searching for that perfect picture, this is where you will hit the mark. The dolphins swim in pods of up to about thirty, and you can hear them chirping to each other as they interact and communicate with each other.

Marsa Alam offers the rare opportunity for experienced divers to dive with sharks. Emperor Divers offer this – they also have a hundred percent safety record. There are many species of sharks in the area including hammerhead, tiger shark, white tip, thresher and other species, so you won’t be disappointed.

The Hamata Islands are as far from the Red Sea coast of Marsa Alam as you are allowed to go. They can only be described as the Maldives of the Red Sea, small islands with sugar-white sandy beaches just off the mainland. These pristine islands are protected as a wildlife reserve as wild eagles nest here, and the waters and corals are pristine.

In the Hamata area, everything in the sea looks brighter and bigger than anywhere else. Eagle rays fly through the water, napoleons are the big beauties you dream about and see in pictures, and moray eels are as big as you are!

The mainland coast at Hamata is lined with coral and dotted with Bedouin beach camps, a wonderfully chilled place to stay if you’ve come to dive. Almost all residents will be divers, making even the evenings something to look forward to. You can share stories, make new friends and get a great atmosphere by going to the beach barbecue, creating your own fun.

Marsa Alam is an emerging resort and an opportunity not to be missed for any diver. If you’re planning a family holiday, Port Ghalib and Coraya Bay resort hotels mean you’ll be able to get away to enjoy your dive without too much fuss from other family members!

Other local activities in these two areas include excellent shopping at Port Ghalib and horse riding and quad biking at Copacabana, which is just off Coraya Bay. The hotels also offer spa facilities, massage, sports and entertainment programs, so there really is something to keep every member of the family happy. One thing is for sure – if you come to Marsa Alam and go diving – it is guaranteed to be just the first of many future visits.
