Origin/Spread:

o Italy, Austria, Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia-Montenegro, Bosnia-

Herzegovina, Macedonia, some Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean islands, Albania,

Greece, Turkey and Transcaucasia.

Subspecies:

o Vipera ammodytes gregorwallneri: from south to Eastern Austria and Slovenia.

It is no longer a subgroup

o Vipera ammodytes meridionalis: South Macedonia, southern Albania, Greece to

Western European Turkey.

o Vipera ammodytes montandoni: Romania, Northern Bulgaria (up to the Black Sea) to

European Turkey.

o Vipera ammodytes ruffoi: Only the surroundings of Bolzano, Alto Adige Italy. No

subspecies no.

o Vipera ammodytes transcaucasiana: North and west coast near Turkey

in the Caucasus.

Description:

o This strong, heavily built snake grows up to 80 cm long, some individuals

reaches even over 95 cm. Males are larger than females. It has a typical triangular head that protrudes clearly from the thin neck. On the top of the head they have

a horn arranged diagonally in front. 21-23 keeled scales. Both men and

females have a dorsal zigzag band. Males are brighter in color than females

and have sharper markings on the dorsal zigzag band.

Habitat:

o They prefer warm and dry areas such as rocky scrubby slopes, and can be found in them as well

on the edge of forests or in lawns. It can be found up to 2000 meters above sea level.

They are active during the day until dusk and like sunny places.

Attitude:

o Animals are usually not aggressive. In case of disturbance they hiss loudly

and bite sometimes. Always handle this species with hook or tongs!! Never “free

glove”!!

Terrarium:

o These vipers should be kept in medium-sized cages in a sandy, fertile mixture

nature is from April to May, in captivity 1-3 weeks after the end of hibernation and

men have shed.

Poison:

o The venom is probably the strongest of the European vipers, with the exception of

Macrovipera schweizeri and Montivipera xanthina. Hematoxin. Life threatening

or deadly bites are rarely expressed, usually local symptoms of

drunkenness Pain is usually severe, swelling occurs within 2 hours.

Among the general symptoms of intoxication are listed: vomiting, beating e

Food:
