Rogue Wolf

Oldenglen is a special place near Jax’s home in southern Oregon. Losing his life in England was difficult for him. However, the school was not his salvation, but the magical relationship he discovered with this unique forest and the creatures that live within, as well as trust and friendship with each other.

Maintaining the protected area is always an ongoing challenge. With the ever-expanding new housing developments for humans threatening the natural habitats of wild creatures while maintaining the balance of nature between the growing human population and nature.

Balances within Oldenglen are also difficult to maintain. Providing food for all creatures requires just the right ratio between predators and prey. Many prey require massive amounts of plants and small creatures, while predators must depend on an abundance of prey or they starve.

Oldenglen now faces two challenges.

The first includes some new visitors, eleven wolves. The problem is that this limestone area cannot feed so much without destroying the population of predatory animals. How does one convince wolves to leave the area? How many creatures will be food for this herd? With their food needs, local farmers raising sheep and cows fear for the survival of their herds. They see that the only solution is to kill the wolves.

Another problem that worries Jax and Sarah is the existence of two nearby poachers who rent from Sarah’s grandfather. Can they save the young eagle that was captured?

Rogue Wolf is the third book in this anticipated five book series. This Oldenglen series should be read in sequence. At a minimum, all readers should read the first book, Oldenglen to understand the characters and their relationships and history individually and with each other.

Oldenglenthe first book in the series has been the recipient of many awards, including a Silver Medal in the 2016 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards for the Bill Fisher Award for Best First Book: Young Children and Second Place in the Views Reader Literary Awards 2015 / 2016 for ages 12-16.

the second book, hermit also won numerous awards. It was a Wish Shelf Red Ribbon Winner, a finalist in the 2016 Foreward Indies for Juvenile Fiction, a Silver Medalist in the 2017 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards for Young Readers, and an Honorable Mention in the 2016/2017 Views Readers Literary Awards.

In all of these books, including this one, all the characters are believable and realistic, including the animals who stay loyal to the creature and have personality as they magically communicate with Jax.

With themes of balance, friendship and anti-bullying, the pace is fast with the reader wanting more with cliff-hanging chapter endings and the book truly expressing the harmony of nature.

Even the cover is beautifully illustrated by the artist, Chris Beatrice.

The Oldenglen series was started by author Robin Mason and his father, Michael Mason. Robin finished books two and three on his own. Robin was born in England but spent considerable time in his childhood exploring an estate in British Columbia while his father read him numerous books, including The Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, The Wind in the Willows, The HobbitAND lord of the rings trilogy.

This book is recommended for children between the ages of eight and twelve. Personally, I would consider this book challenging for an eight-year-old to read independently, and I believe this age level would thoroughly enjoy it as a read-aloud.

I also recommend that this book be extended to readers throughout high school. In fact, readers of all ages, adults and children, would thoroughly enjoy it Deceptive wolf.
