Why grass-fed beef?

You’ve probably heard that beef consumption is linked to heart disease. That may be true, but it’s not the whole story. Heart disease is linked to grain-fed animals – but grass-fed animals have some big benefits for your health.

First of all, we must recognize that the body needs certain nutrients in order to “take care of business” on a daily basis. Taking care of business involves ensuring that cells grow, regulate and function properly. An essential element we must have (the body cannot make it) are fatty acids. We need a regular supply of the essential fatty acids Omega 3 and Omega 6. The ideal ratio is 2 Omega 3 to one Omega 6. Most people get a ratio between 15:1 and 50:1. This is where the trouble starts and comes the connection with the disease.

What is the benefit of grass-fed beef?

Omega 3s are found in abundance in seafood and some nuts and seeds such as flax and walnuts, as well as grass-fed beef, lamb, bison and venison. Omega 3 in meat is much more available to our body than omega 3 from plants, so meat is our main and most reliable source. We get a lot of Omega 6 in our diet, which is found in abundance in whole grains and vegetable oils (olive oil or coconut oil are the best to use.)

Omega 3 is found in the chloroplasts of green leaves and algae. Cattle eat omega 3 in grass and put it in their fat. Cattle switched from omega 3 rich grass and fed omega 6 rich grains lose the benefits of omega 3 fat in their fat in no time. The same thing happens with eggs from hens deprived of greens have a similar effect.

Grass-fed meat has 2 to 3 times more omega 3 than grain-fed animals.

So what happens when we get too much omega 3? Here are some important changes that take place in our body. Lower blood pressure, less irregular heartbeat and 50% less chance of having a heart attack. In addition, you see lower levels of bad “LDL” cholesterol. (1)

The brain also needs ample amounts of omega 3, and getting it can result in less depression, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) or Alzheimer’s disease. (2)

And we don’t have to stop there. Omega 3 has been shown to slow cancer growth and inhibit the spread of cancer. It also speeds recovery from surgery and protects the body from the weight loss that goes along with advanced cancer. (3)

Grass-fed meat has less fat and calories.

As if all that wasn’t enough. Grass-fed meat can have 1/3 as much fat as grain-fed meat. This is about the same as venison, venison, skinless chicken breast and other lean meats. If you eat a typical amount of beef (66 pounds per year) and switch to grass-fed beef, you can save approximately 18,000 calories per year. Without any other changes you will lose about six pounds a year.

So, for your health, look into providing grass-fed meat for your family. And, for the record, it tastes great too.
