The name Nile is derived from a Greek word Neilos meaning valley, the Nile River is the longest river in the world, the source of which is known from Jinja Uganda. It is a large northeast African river that begins its journey in well-watered regions near the equator and then flows north through the terrible Sahara desert before emptying into the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The river is 6,695 km (4,184 miles) long. The river flows through a total of nine countries, although it is most closely associated with Uganda and Egypt. Other countries include Ethiopia, Zaire, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and Sudan.

This longest river mainly consists of two main branches, that is the White Nile and the Blue Nile, which then join at Khartoum to form the Main Nile which consists of the Egyptian Nile and the Nile Cataract. The longest segment of the White Nile further divides into three 1) Central Region of Sudan; 2) Sudd; and 3) the Lake Plain region.

The Nile has played a major role in the civilizational life and history of some of these countries, especially Egypt and Uganda. The Nile is a source of energy for Ugandans, as the countries main electricity dam is built on the Nile. It has also provided water for human life and its banks are so fertile that despite the fact that Egypt is a dry land, it has enabled the Egyptians to sustain their lives through irrigation and the fertile land on the banks. The Nile has also provided water for animals such as crocodiles that live on the banks of the river in Egypt. Nile crocodiles in Egypt are about 4 meters long although some have been reported to be longer.

The Nile as a river has a lot to offer tourists, ranging from boat trips to the source, to activities such as rafting, kayaking, fishing on the Victoria Nile and bungee jumping in Uganda. For Egypt it is a whole new story as there are many things to see on the banks of the Nile, including historical sites. Individuals interested in experiencing the Nile up close and personal can travel along the famous river aboard riverboat cruises that depart from numerous cities along the coast.
