Some Thoughts on Functional Exercise

For all you misguided people out there who believe that training with heavy weights in an aggressively cumulative manner is the path to fitness, I’m going to try to throw a monkey wrench into your thought process, for your benefit.

First I want you to think about the other animals we share this planet with; the small and the big ones. They live their lives, even in captivity, without doing repetitive strengthening exercises and yet remain healthy, fit and strong! How is this possible? Surely, if they don’t exercise in all the stupid ways we’ve been conditioned to believe are necessary, they’ll become weak, anemic, and degenerate, right? That’s what doctors and fitness experts say about us humans, anyway.

Now step into my CommonSense corner for a moment and ponder this. Imagine a wild-caught great ape, gorilla or orangutan, strong as all get out, housed inside a cage in a zoo. Now, of course, upon his arrival, you certainly wouldn’t want to be caged with him, knowing full well that you’d be torn apart in no time.

About 10 years ago…for the last decade this beast, with a body very similar to yours, has lived the life of a couch potato. For the sake of argument, let’s also consider a captive tiger that has done nothing but pace back and forth in its very small cage for the same 10 years; nor does the animal exercise as we are told we should, in the gym pumping iron, in the classroom doing calisthenics, running, cycling, doing push-ups, sit-ups or any of the other things we are told we should be doing. to maintain our strength.

Of course, after this long period of inactivity, at least without any exercise as we know it, without repeated vigorous exercise or activity, animals must become extremely emaciated, frail and feeble; right? So who in their right mind would think they could climb into a cage with this unexercised animal and overcome it?

I ask that you not only think about this nuisance, but also entertain images of squirrels, dogs, lazy cats, and every other creature we share this planet with. Have you ever seen any other creature, with a skeleton and a musculature (all very similar upon inspection), exercise in the repetitive linear ways that we humans have invented? The answer is no, and the question is: what do they know that we don’t?

Where does the Strength in those muscles come from?

Now, can you imagine what the result would be if someone put a racehorse in a bodybuilder’s training regimen? Or a squirrel or cat forced to run a 5K or 20 mile marathon, believing that there would be some positive benefit to the creature in the end? Come on, tell a squirrel that he or she needs to run the equivalent of a marathon to prove what great shape they’re in and they’ll think you’re crazy.

I believe that every creature intuitively knows what it is expected to do with its physical structure in order to keep it functional throughout its life. That is, every creature except the creature with the largest brain, man, who has access to a seemingly inexhaustible supply of ideas on how to create dysfunction out of functionality and disease out of health.

Instead of delving into the mysteries of how every other creature maintains its structural integrity throughout its life, to use that information to our advantage, we humans have done everything possible to extricate ourselves from the Web of Life. , to see oneself as above and beyond. the rest of life here on this planet, we try to create our own rules and ways of living, which leads to the degradation of our species.

Let’s take a look around at some easily observable examples of human achievement when it comes to flouting the Natural Laws of Motion and Structure. And let us ask ourselves in doing so, why there are no similar examples of these kinds of contortions and distorted structures among the rest of the “lower creatures.” Of course, the only ones that get noticed are the ones we humans have tamed or caged…

To look at the body of a bodybuilder, or a cyclist or a runner is to see a misaligned, distorted, often “pain-ridden” structure caused by activities undertaken under the guise of Health and Fitness. I have learned from my practical work with the structural myofascial body that of all the creatures of creation here, only humans are so foolish and fallible as to engage in such senseless destructive activities. The fact that these mechanistically logical analytical people cannot understand the effects that the forms of exercise they choose have on their structure, their bodies, boggles my mind.

For some inexplicable reason, they are unable to turn the kind of focused attention and discernment they use on any other type of mechanical object to the function and use of the human body. The rational logical scientific mind would never treat one of their precious machines the way they treat the human body. This statement is true for other aspects of the body as well (like what we have placed in it), but here we will stick to its Structural Mechanics.

The harmful distortions caused by repetitive linear exercises (exponentially magnified by the use of heavy weights) are so obvious, through visual observation, palpation (touch) and functional deformation through the joints, the “strengthened” muscles intersect. It doesn’t take Einstein to notice that a weightlifter soon loses noticeable mobility throughout the body, achieving less range of motion across all joints, resulting in less flexibility with each workout.

I’ll use my “off-road” analogy once again and ask how astute one would have to be to not notice the negative effects that would occur after any off-road experience with their vehicle (including bicycles)? And how long could that person continue the activity if he did not take care of proper maintenance? Watching this unfold as it is, the whole “hard body, abs and abs of steel, build a fit body” craziness that has become the norm in the mainstream, is as funny to me as watching a playground with kids little ones playing with it. a sandbox filled with sharp knives and loaded guns.

Seriously, how many squats do you need to be able to do easily? The answer is one; the time you need. This is how every other animal on this planet behaves, except us. Experts have somehow come to the conclusion that if one sit-up is good, then 50 or 100 would be much better; not understanding what happens to the musculature and skeleton when so many repetitive movements are performed, for no other reason than to build “strength”, which is actually functionally diminished by the growth and shortening of the “strengthened” muscles.

This is a paradigm shift that I am creating for you; showing you the whole phenomenon from another angle, and based on a completely logical, mechanical and provable model. Once you realize it, your previous perception will seem as fleeting as a fading dream that is no longer relevant.
