A Review – Theories of the Origin of Speech

Man differs from animals because of the extraordinary development of the brain and the power of articulate language. Indeed as civilizations progress, man continues to study and explore the world.

Since the beginning of time, language has become essential in the progress and evolution of time. From caves and tribes; signs and symbols were evident in gestures, communication and various art forms in the way man lives.

Check this out:

1. Bow-wow theory – Speech that imitates natural sounds, such as the barking of dogs and other animals, etc.

2. The pooh-pooh theory – Speech is derived from instinctive outpourings caused by pain, joy, or other intense feelings or sensations. The earliest language form was interjections and interjections.

3. The ding-dong theory – This theory is a mystical harmony between sound and feeling, that for every impression within there is a suitable expression pa – “everything that rings rings. Every substance has its own special ring”. (For example: the bell)

4. Ye-he-ho theory – Words were created as a result of expressions after strong muscular efforts. It would ease the body to let the breath out forcefully and repeatedly, “rise” and “pull”. This theory was put forward by a 19th century Noire scholar.

5. Gesture Theory – The speech that emerged when men began to imitate with their tongues and the gestures they made with their bodies. Sir Richard Paget quotes a passage from Darwin’s book, The Expression of the Emotions.

Language was thus created, from the tongue, lips and imitative movements of the jaw is a gesture that means “eat”, others call such gestures “pantomime”.

6. The tarara-boom-de-ay theory – Speech that originated in the semi-musical expressions of early man when his main vocal exercise was meaningless humming and singing.

Example: “Hooray! Let’s give thanks.” This theory was suggested by Professor Otto Jespersen.

This also highlights the romantic aspect of love and hymns.

7. Talli-ho theory – This theory came to life as a result of communication needs that arose during hunting; believing that the earliest speech was an imperative language consisting only of commands such as the cry of a child, or the begging of an animal, &c.

Henry James quotes “All life turns on the matter of our speech – the medium through which we communicate.”

The signs and symbols of a language in the daily affairs of peoples transmit an orderly and convenient system of communication that shows the progress of cultures for all time.
