Hanover Band

The Hanover Concert Band, formed in 1989, is a group of dedicated amateur musicians who meet regularly throughout the year to play and perform band music.

ABOUT THE BAND

The goal of our organization is to provide members with the opportunity to pursue their musical interests in a congenial atmosphere: in other words, to have fun playing. At the same time we strive to provide a community service with quality, entertaining performances at various venues in the Hanover County area, where we are generously supported by the Hanover County Board of supervisors through the department of Parks and Recreation.

BAND ORGANIZATION

The band board consists of the music directors, officers (elected) and committee chairpersons. The board meets monthly to conduct and plan band business. All band members are welcome to attend and participate in all board meetings.

DIRECTOR

Karla Bloom of Montpelier is our current Director and Conductor.

OVERVIEW OF YEARLY BAND ACTIVITIES

The band practices and performs throughout the year. A typical year may include 15 to 20 concerts. The most active performance periods are the summer concert season (May-July) and the Christmas season (Nov-Dec). The winter months are usually spent preparing new music for the spring and summer.

Annual concerts open to the public usually include Musical Mondays at Maymont, Ashland's Fourth of July celebration, the Ashland Strawberry Faire, and the Hanover Tomato Festival, among others. The band is a member of the Association of Concert Bands.

TO SCHEDULE A CONCERT

Call Jim @ (804) 798-6609 at least six weeks before the function. There is no charge to Hanover County organizations, but the band always appreciates a donation to help defray the costs of music and equipment.

JOIN

Musicians of all ages are welcome to join the band, although students in middle school and below should have parental permission. Auditions are not required, but the ability to read musical notation is essential. The band normally performs music in grades III - VI. so members should be comfortable playing and performing at this level or above.

REHEARSALS

Regular band rehearsals are held Tuesday evening at the Hanover Arts and Activities Center**, located at 500 S. Center St. in Ashland. (Map to HAAC from I-95 & Rts 1 & 54) Rehearsals start at 7:30 p.m. and last 2 hours with a 5-10 minute break. However, check here for any changes

Cancellation of Rehearsal: If Hanover County schools are closed due to weather conditions, band rehearsal will be canceled. If other circumstances require cancellation of rehearsal or a concert, you should be notified by your section leader. Most schedules and changes are also posted in the box below.

CHANGES (if any)
Tuesday, August 26th will be a concert at Randolph-Macon (play at 7:00pm by the Fountain) rather than a rehearsal.
Black pants with red band shirt is the uniform of choice for concerts until further notice.
